KFDM COOP Posted September 1, 2009 Report Share Posted September 1, 2009 Local standouts walk on to Lamar football Van Wade The Orange Leader BEAUMONT — Former West Orange-Stark standout quarterback Andre Bevil will have some Orange County company in the Lamar University football program as four local players landed on the Lamar football roster as walk-ons. Lamar head coach Ray Woodard released the new roster on Monday. Bevil, competed at Navarro Junior College for two seasons before transferring to Lamar. At Navarro, Bevil completed 65-of-134 passes for 1,062 yards. As a senior at WO-S, Bevil completed 125-of-195 passes for 2,069 yards and 25 touchdowns. Making the team from our area as walk-ons includes Orangefield’s Jeremy Granger, Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s Joseph Viator, Bridge City’s Patrick Carlton and Deweyville’s Blake Peveto. Granger was The Orange Leader’s Athlete of the Year in 2008. As a senior Bobcat, Granger rushed for 713 yards and 16 touchdowns on 120 carries and was also an All-District selection in basketball and also qualified for the 3A Region III track meet in the discus. Granger (6-2, 250) is projected to play fullback for the Cardinals. Viator (5-7, 195), The Leader’s Defensive Most Valuable Player in 2007, after making over 120 tackles for the Battlin’ Bears, is listed as a cornerback on Lamar’s roster. Carlton (6-2, 245), a three-time All-District center for the Cardinals, is listed as an offensive lineman and Peveto, All-District at Deweyville, is listed as a 6-3, 195-pound linebacker.
