Sept. 3, 2009 -- A flu-like outbreak in Edna forced the school to cancel Friday's Week 1 scheduled game against Class 2A's No. 7-ranked Altair Rice Consolidated.

Then, just as she did last Thursday and Friday nights, Mother Nature lit the Metroplex skies and jumbled the entire Metroplex schedule.

Rice Consolidated, after the notification from Edna early in the week, found a new opponent in the Freer Buckaroos. The two teams will meet in Victoria.

Consolidated's scheduled game at Wharton last week was canceled by lightning storms. Freer (1-0) led 1A Benavides 19-0 when the same line of storms forced both teams to the lockerroom for the night.

Just after 6 p.m. Thursday night -- eerily the same as happened exactly one week earlier -- storms began moving into the northern and western Metroplex. Lightning ensued, and teams headed for shelter.

The highlight game of the night -- and one of the Marquee Matchups in the state -- featured Duncanville at Garland. The Panthers, playing only five days after their impressive win over Odessa Permian in San Antonio, held a 3-0 lead very early in the second quarter when the storms arrived.

After a lengthy delay, school officials announced the game would be canceled. No make-up date will be scheduled.

Also in Garland, Naaman Forest held a 21-13 lead over Lewisville when play was halted. After more than an hour delay, the teams decided to resume play on Friday. They will pick up where they left off at 4 p.m. Friday at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.

To the west of Garland, Richardson led The Colony 14-0 with 2:34 left in the first quarter. The game will resume 7 p.m. Friday at Wildcat-Ram Stadium.

To the southwest of Garland, Carrollton Creekview held a 16-0 lead over Grand Prairie when lightning arrived. The game will resume at the Gopher-Warrior Bowl at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Back to the west, in Fort Worth, O.D. Wyatt and Dallas South Oak Cliff were tied 7-7 at halftime when the game was officially suspended. The teams agreed to resume play at 11 a.m. Saturday at Clark Stadium.

Polytechnic, a school experiencing a revitalization after avoiding shutdown by TEA over the summer, led Dallas Jefferson 31-0 when the game was stopped with 5:12 remaining in the second quarter. Coaches agreed to call the game at that point.

Poly has not outscored its opponents 93-0 this season. After four straight years of sub-standard TAKS scores, Poly was facing shutdown by the Texas Education Agency. However, thanks to dramatic efforts by school administration and former alumni to provide tutoring and other improvement efforts, Poly was rated acceptable when 2009 TAKS scores were announced. (TEA can forcibly make school districts close campuses after five successive years of "unacceptable" ratings, based on TAKS scores.)

In Dallas, Woodson Wilson led Adamson 46-0 at the end of the third quarter. When the weather arrived, the coaches agreed to call the game.

On the far northern edge of the Metroplex, defending Class 5A Division I state champion Allen struggled -- not only to complete its game, but just to win. The Eagles, who let a 17-0 lead slip away last week in a 28-25 loss at 4A #1 Longview, trailed a much-improved Monterey Prepa Tech of Mexico 14-7 when lightning stopped the contest. The teams waited more than two hours before resuming play. Once they did resume, Allen got things going and won the game, 35-21.

Allen defeated the Mexican "collegiate" team 55-14 last season.

On Garland's southeastern edge, Waxachie held a 22-7 halftime lead over West Mesquite when the storms arrived. The teams waited about two hours before resuming play. Waxahachie won the game, 43-14.

Two six-man games in west central Texas were called early. Lazbuddie defeated the Happy JV, 14-0, in a shortened contest. Guthrie was a 32-19 winner over Harrold in a game also shortened by the storms.
