Guest coachacola Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 Nice article in the Port Arthur News from Tom Halliburton: Head coach Ray Woodard and assistant Craig McGallion agreed on Wednesday that Lamar's defensive line prospects probably displayed the strongest showing to date of any segment in the squad. Six of those DL prospects are on scholarship -- end Jesse Dickson (6-2, 228), junior tackle Mario Foster (6-3, 260), junior tackle Leroy Johnson (6-6, 372), end Jeremy Kirt (6-0, 234), tackle Rickey Wagner (6-0, 224), and tackle Mark Murrill (6-1, 250)... Woodard would love for Johnson to trim down from 372 to 330. A seventh DL prospect, Beaumont Kelly freshman Doran Guillory (6-2, 238) also can be elevated to a scholarship player pending his academic status... Guest mffl Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 Alief Elsik freshman guard Emone Bailey (6-2, 335) "probably has looked as good or better than anybody" among the offensive line prospects, according to Woodard. Of course all the offensive line positions are up for grabs but two real bright spots in the early drills have been Lumberton freshman center Kyle Gillam (6-1, 233) and Kilgore College transfer John Woods (6-6, 307) from Rockport Fulton who has been a "pleasant surprise" to the coaches during training camp.... Rather than its originally scheduled date of Sept. 19, the first LU intra-squad scrimmage has been moved to Monday, Sept. 21 at 5 p.m. The change was made by Ray Woodard in order for the scrimmage to coincide with the dedication of Lamar's new practice facility on that same afternoon at 4:15 p.m.... One position change also has resulted from this fall's first two workout weeks. Livingston freshman Keaton Parker has moved from slot to running back.... West Brook and Texas A&M product Billy Chavis (6-4, 258) has "blocked better" than Woodard had expected. Chavis has been working at tight end and also is regarded as a defensive end prospect... Beaumont ISD products also have shined brightly in other defensive spots. Beaumont Central safety Branden Thomas been a most encouraging candidate in the defensive backfield. Transfers Johnathan Epke (5-9, 211) from Cape Vincent, N.Y. (Dean College) and West Brook grad Jacody Coleman (6-1, 238) from the University of Iowa have been the most-developed linebacker candidates so far.... West Texas A&M transfer Kevin Smith (6-3, 197) from Seguin has looked good among the quarterbacks, along with Navarro College transfer Andre Bevil from West Orange-Stark. The best receiver at practices to date was considered to be Spring Westfield freshman Barry Ford (6-0, 177).... "The defensive line as a whole is probably looking the best of any unit so far," McGallion said. "Some of the areas, like the linebackers, take a little more time. Even though we have older guys, they all have the mentality of a freshman because they're all new in this program." LU will complete its second practice week in full pads this afternoon on the south practice field at 5 p.m. -- Tom Halliburton
