UTSA football plans to join SLC in 2013

UTSA has made no secret of its desire to field a major-college football program.

In the meantime, baby steps.

Following two years as an independent in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA), the Roadrunners are tentatively slated to join the Southland Conference in 2013.

“I think it's pretty much set,†UTSA athletic director Lynn Hickey said.

“We have agreed to put them in beginning in 2013,†SLC commissioner Tom Burnett said. “We don't have (dates) yet, but hopefully we will lock those in soon.â€

Does the league split into two five-team divisions? Or does everyone play everybody?

My proposal....

SLC Texas Division

UTSA

Lamar

SHSU

SFA

TXST

SLC East Division

Nicholls

SLU

UCA

NWST

McN

I've said this before, but under this format, I think that each team in the SLC Texas and the SLC East should get a set rival in the other division (McN-Lamar, SFA-NWST, Nich-TXST are 'locks'). Not sure what you do with SLU, SHSU, UCA and UTSA. Then, you play eight games. Four division games, rival game, plus three out of division foes. Rotate that team you miss, but it can never be the rival game.

I would be surprised if that was the makeup of the SLC football schools in 2013.  UTSA made it very clear from the beginning they wanted to go FBS ASAP and bypass the SLC.  I guess the CUSA said "no thank you" and the SLC probably told them they'd be kicked out completely if they didn't bring their football team.

With Texas State also declaring publicly they want to go FBS what's the SLC going to do?  Maybe there's a behind the scenes plan for a group of schools to go FBS, that's why UTSA agreed to come aboard.  UTSA and/or Texas State may jump ship before 2013, especially since the moratorium ends in 2011.  UTSA has big plans for facility upgrades while Texas State and LU are in the middle of their upgrades.  These upgrades are not really needed for the SLC.  Should be an interesting next few years.

I think you are right from a previous post..definitely agree that some behind the scenes talk of the Southland going FBS..its the only the thing that makes sense if UTSA joins the Southland in 2013 instead of going straight to FBS when they can.
