5 out offense

Most teams that run it don't have a strong post player, that's why there in it to start with. They won't give up a ton of rebounds because they usually don't rebound real well anyway.Warren ran it some a few years back when Hand was down here. They shot the ball pretty well and won quite a few ball games running it.High school ball is all about match ups and personell and if your kids are good shooters it can work well.

Spurger runs it at times and do a good job with it,but they have a few pretty good shooters.

If they wont come out of the zone they play some 4 out 1 in. With a good G you can break down their

zone and kick it out.

On your 4 out 1 in where is most of your screening done?(to make room for cutters coming off screens?)

From my veiw point most screens are done around the elbow, and some screens on the back side

to help out your post are the back side shooter

Bob Huggins ran a lot of 5 out stuff when he was at Cincinatti.....although he called it the "open post" offense.....just because a team runs 5 out doesn't mean they are not set up to rebound or can't rebound.....5 out is simply the starting point for all the players.....it gives the offense freedom to decide who they want to post up based on matchups.....if 5 out is run effectively someone will post up at some point.....they just don't have a post player that is confined to the post area.

My father used to run it in his later years coaching, when he did not have the bigs at Kashmere that he used to have at Madison...Called it 5 wide...It took me a minute to see the benefit of it, because I am such a huge believer in having solid post play, but in some cases it can be very effective if run right.

High school and lower offense....hmmmm.....lets see....the Princeton offense is based out of a 5 out look....and I can name a half dozen teams that have played in the NCAA tournament over the last few years that run versions of 5 out offenses.....

5 out is very effective now because so much of basketball is predicated off the dribble and 5 out helps spread the floor to create spacing and penetration lanes....heck the dribble drive offense is practically 5 out

The princeton offense was created for the little guy and that is true, but it is most effective with a post presence.  Most college programs that run a similar variation of a five out has somewhat of a post presence and it is more like a four out!!!  The up screen, pick and roll, and the back screen is not to effective without a big... And that is what the princton offense is really all about.

That is what i prefer to run. I think it is easier to rebound out of it, you don't necessarily have to have great shooters, and it can be ran with true post players. Someone said it is about matchups and when you find that mismatch you post that person up. Nos is correct in all of his comments. I think it is becoming more and more popular. However, it is not easy to teach. It is very similiar to Princeton in that the fundamentals of it consists of backdoor cuts and reading your defender.

We are doing our best. My best player has chrones disease and it is wearing him out. He needs surgery but can't get it. Probably won't play this season. Right now we are focused on his health and not his basketball. Probably the best kid I have ever coached. Those boys in Htown this year would kill people with the five out. I hope TB is considering it, but he knows best what to run. Not the Woden of old, but they are the kind of kids I like to coach. Come see us play some time.
