Pirates looking to nab win in Pineland

PINELAND — Looking to put together four complete quarters, the Deweyville Pirates look to slow down a gritty West Sabine team in Pineland tonight.

The Pirates are coming off a tough 40-20 defeat at the hands of Hemphill last week with the game being much closer than the final outcome.

“I was really proud of the kids for hanging in there after being down 20-0 at one point,†said Pirate head coach Russell McDaniel. “The kids kept chipping away and chipping away and got towithin 28-20 but we ran out of gas a little in the fourth period.â€

The Pirates got a nice effort from tailback Trey Craft, who rushed for 93 yards on 11 carries as Deweybville was without leading rusher Keeton Addison (254 yards, three TDs), who is out with an ankle injury and may or may not play tonight.

Tight end Woody Woodall had his best game in a Pirate uniform, catching five passes for 41 yards. Eric Avila had three grabs for 28 yards.

The Tigers fell to Garrison 21-6 last week. They have also fell to Hemphill as well (31-24) and defeated Colmesneil 44-6 to open the season.

“They’re one of those tough and scrappy teams,†said McDaniel. “They go out and execute well. They really played hard in their losses to both Garrison and Hemphill. It’s going to be a good test for our kids.â€

The Tigers finished 3-6, 2-4 in District 19-1A last year.

They are led by speedy tailback Chris Parks, who ran for 880 yards last season along with bruising fullback Chris Williams along with quarterback DeVonte Thomas.

“We have several areas we want to improve on this week,†said McDaniel. “Next week, Anahuac rolls into our place to start up district play. You really want to iron out a few things in that last non-district game and we hope to do that. We’re looking at four full quarters of good play, we’ve been a little inconsistent there.â€

should be a good one.  WS has some speed and looked good at times in an early scrimmage against Evadale in which Evadale won (if there is such a thing in a scrimmage)

Deweyville didn't do much right against the Rebels in opening week of play but you gotta believe they will get better.

Good luck to both and no injuries...
