Deweyville welcomes Anahuac in 23-2A opener

DEWEYVILLE — Throw away what happened in non-district because the District 23-2A season kicks off for real tonight at Pirate Stadium as Deweyville welcomes the Anahuac Panthers.

The Pirates (1-3) look to end a three-game skid against the Panthers (3-1), who are definitely playoff experienced as the 23-2A campaign kicks off.

The Pirates are coming off a tough 31-8 loss to the West Sabine Tigers last week and our looking for their first win since getting a season-opening win against Sabine Pass.

Deweyville is paced on offense by senior tailback Keeton Addison, who has rushed for 280 yards and three touchdowns. Addison, who missed the Pirates’ game against Hemphill in a loss due to an ankle injury, played very little against West Sabine last week but should see his time increase this week.

Trey Craft has stepped in and has done a nice job, zipping for 199 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries.

Pirate quarterback Michael Williams has completed 32-of-58 passes for 294 yards and two TDs. Tight end Woody Woodall has eight catches for 72 yards and Addison has nine grabs for 67 yards.

After losing to Kinkaid 20-8 to start the season the Panthers have defeated Danbury (41-9), Tomball Concordia Lutheran (28-0) and Hitchcock (49-14).

The Panthers currently have 23-2A’s leading rusher in tailback Dewan Childress, who has zipped for 594 yards and six touchdowns on 72 carries.

Quarterback Cody Johnson has completed 20-of-29 passes for 399 yards and seven touchdowns. His favorite target has been Braxton Mayes, who has hauled in 11 catches for 275 yards and five touchdowns.
