KFDM COOP Posted September 30, 2009 Report Posted September 30, 2009 BC gets critical 21-3A win over Silsbee in 5 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — Becca Mathews has barely seen a full Bridge City volleyball team for over a week. The Lady Cardinals still did not have a full roster Tuesday yet Bridge City was healthy enough to take down Silsbee in five games to go to 2-0 in District 21-3A play. Bridge City, who was without Bria Thibodeaux, defeated Silsbee 25-20, 25-16, 20-25, 26-28 and 15-5. Sara McPherson had her first full day back in over a week on Monday, Emily Kosh and Hailey Tally missed time last week and Thibodeaux was still out with a foot injury. “It has been tough and we have not made any excuses,†Mathews said. “It has been tough to even do drills at practice. I am so proud of them right now. They never once give up. They almost gave me a heart attack tonight but they stepped up when it counted.†After basically cruising to a 2-0 lead, the Lady Cardinals let the Lady Tigers right back in the match. Bridge City committed 16 errors in the third game and 19 in the fourth to allow Silsbee to tie the match. The final game was nip/tuck to start until McPherson came to serve. McPherson, who missed a week’s worth of school with the flu, came to serve with Bridge City up 8-5 and never left the spot. She struck for eight straight service points, the last point coming off an ace. “Coach also works us so hard in practice and that helps us in matches like this,†McPherson said. “I felt tired several times but had to push through. Everyone of us helps makes this a team. We rely on each other to do our jobs.†Marlee Lopez led the match with 14 kills while Kosh had a match-high 28 assists. McPherson had 12 kills, eight aces and 17 digs while Jordan Royal added 10 kills and 12 digs. Brooklyn Hogden had 11 kills while Allison Angelle added nine digs. Maggie Stump finished with seven kills while Tally put in 11 assists. Chelsea Neely had a superb match for Silsbee with 13 kills while Tori Gardner had 14 assists before leaving the match due to an injury. Silsbee led Game 2 10-9 before McPherson stepped to serve. She struck for eight straight service points, including two aces, to push Bridge City up 16-11. The Lady Cardinals were up 21-14 when Royal came to serve and she came up big for Bridge City with six straight service points. Kosh and Lopez connected for the game’s final point. Bridge City was able to stay in control of Game 1 even with 12 errors. The Lady Tigers helped Bridge City out after committing three errors to end the game. “We have been down multiple points so many times this year and this team never quits,†Mathews said. “I always tell them that we don’t have to win every game except the next one. There are too many good teams in this district to get ahead of yourselves. They should be proud of themselves right now and get ready for Orangefield on Friday.†The Lady Cardinals travel to face the Lady Bobcats on Friday.
