I hope he's right... this team has to gel fast though if they want to win. The SLC should be very competitive, UTSA, Sam, TAMCC, and Nicholls should be the top teams.. and of course there's always SFA... We'll just have to see.

According to Texas Roundball and I'm paraphrasing:

..........These schools (SLC)  don't do a very good job recruiting. ........ some that are average (UTA, Sam Houston) in recruiting, the rest are just bad at evaluating and you hardly ever see them.

Surprised he thought we were average - as you guys know, Bob Marlin gets a highly ranked kid from time to time in Texas hoops, but it mostly comes down to the puzzle pieces to run his style of play. Having talked to other coaches, it seems SHSU is getting a few guys perceived as nothing special by different services, but that are very well-liked by coaches.

Funny thing is that most of these so called recruiting expert sites miss the boat on talent evaluation big time. I used to look at how they rated our incoming recruits and get hyped up about it and have found that 9 times out of 10 they were dead wrong. I don't even give them much attention anymore. Heck the best player we have had the past 20 years they had as a low rated prospect (AD).

I still say that if you can get 5 good players out of HS and take you lumps the first couple of years that you have a good chance in years 3 and 4 at upsetting the teams that recruit that one stud each year only to see him leave a year later. Something to be said for cohesion.

Roc was recruiting mostly JUCO players from out of state.  Now it appears he's recruiting more in-state HS players.  I think a lot of the SLC schools go for JUCO players and skip over the "average" HS recruits, probably because it's riskier than going with the more experienced JUCO players.
