Hooks said WO-S' 49-6 victory against Brookshire Royal, which is also a Class 3A school, was a confidence booster after suffering a 23-13 loss at Jasper two weeks ago.

Hooks recalled how in 1986, when he won his first state title, WO-S had lost two games early in the season. Hooks said the losses allowed his team to revisit their mistakes and they improved each week.

Oddly enough, one of those losses WO-S suffered in 1986 was to Jasper.

"There are times where you just have to refocus and regroup," said Hooks, who has coached WO-S to a 4-1 record. "We had a week off and then we came back and won against Royal. We feel we are on the upswing but we will see Friday when we play Silsbee."
