Guest coachacola Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 This explains a lot about LU not playing the Big 12 schools: "It's the big-time schools that don't get on the road that really hurt college baseball because when A&M goes to any ballpark in Texas, they fill the stands," Gilligan said by phone Wednesday. Gilligan said his team will play on the road only if the host school is willing to play an equal number of games in Beaumont. LU played A&M once per season nearly every year from 1986 until 2006, with the teams commonly exchanging home dates. UT last visited Beaumont in 1994 for a game LU won 15-3. That was the second time in three seasons LU won at home against UT, which ended the series after the next season. LU also played host to LSU regularly before then Tigers coach Skip Bertman told Gilligan, "We make more money winning in Baton Rouge than we do losing in Beaumont," Gilligan recalled. Maybe after the $5 million in renovations coming to Vincent-Beck in a few years will allow LU to offer more money for these schools to come to Beaumont.
LU Baseball Fan Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 For years UT has played almost every non conference game at home - 2010 they travel to Houston for the Classic Tournament at Minute Maid and one more time for a mid week game with Rice. A&M only plays 4 non conference games that are not at home. They do play Tx State and Sam Houston but why travel when other teams will play you at your home field. Such a shame they have these attitudes. When will was at Lamar we looked forward to those game and the stands were always filled to the max.
TexasTerror Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 Lamar's location is hurting them when the big-time schools. Houston and Huntsville are shorter trips for the Aggies. San Marcos and San Antonio (and for that matter - Houston) are shorter trips for the Horns. I've said it before - LU has had the weakest OOC slates of any of the Texas squads in the SLC. This explains it somewhat. And part of the problem is ADs requiring X amount in gates. That's LSU's issue. The AD wanted several million in gate and they only have two OOC road games (Tulane and NWST).
LU Baseball Fan Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 It is such a shame that it all comes down to money. I also think that the shortened season that started two years ago also hurts. I took the time to look at several Big 12 and SEC schedules for 2010 and there are very few OOC away games. i think it is very unfair to expect smaller schools to only go to those bigger venues and the bigger schools will not reciprocate. I commend Jim Gilligan for not playing teams that refuse to come to Beaumont. I noticed UNO is only playing in The Box this year and LSU is not going to NO. That just plain sucks. Of course I would not expect anything less from the rudest bunch of people I have ever come across in my 35 years of following college baseball, but that is a whole other post......

Well, you know Maineri does not mind it at all. It comes down from the AD. Southern is throwing a fit because LSU wants them at the Box. SU says LSU owes them a home game first. So, SU is no longer on the LSU schedule. Believe SU is falling off UNO's schedule in '11 and they had already fallen off of Tulane's.
lu cards Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 i can see maybe a two for one but the big boys refusing the play away games is bs.i with gilligan on this one.plenty of schools we can bring to beaumont.we also dont have deal with all those wanna be longhorns and aggies fans here in setx.
becktobigs Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 I know it'll never happen but I'd love to see the SLC have a policy just like Gilligan's; i.e., no games without home-and-home. Take away the SLC and it's more difficult for them to schedule anyone other than the big boys (definitately requiring home and home). Maybe then they'd leave Austin or College Station or Baton Rouge once in a while just to have a better shot at road wins.

It's not a problem for us. Does not seem to be much a problem for TXST, UTSA or UT-Arlington either. Even SLU hosted LSU last year and has hosted Tulane numerous times. NWST gets LSU this year. SFA and Nicholls State do not quite have the facilities for visits from major programs. Even McNeese has a home-and-home with UNO and ULL this year. Not bad. Lamar seems to have the most trouble of the schools who have the facilities. It's a location thing - at least on the outside. If it has something to do with the coach himself, that we would not know. Got to figure relations play into things to some degree, but I think there are many more closer schools for which to do business with.
Guest coachacola Posted October 10, 2009 Report Posted October 10, 2009 I was looking at last year's schedules around the SLC and I didn't see any home and home series against UT, A&M or LSU. Like LU, a lot of schools do play home and home games against Rice and Houston. Sun Belt and other CUSA schools don't really count as big name schools. Last year Texas State hosted UT for the opening of their new facility as a favor. I did see home games against Baylor, Nebraska, and a few others which Lamar should be trying to get.

Apparently not looking. Not all home-and-homes are same year deals, especially with the bigger schools that try to limit their road trips annually and split them up over a two year favor. A&M hosted SHSU last year. This year, A&M comes to SHSU. We do a one-game a year home-and-home. Alternates. This year the Aggies go to San Marcos. Can't recall if this is a makeup game from 2007 or not. LSU hosted Northwestern State last year. This year, LSU goes to Northwestern State. LSU did an inseason home-and-home with SLU last year. The Tigers 'rotate' around the state under their new scheduling philosophy. And yes, C-USA schools are big name schools if it is Rice and when they return to status, Tulane.
Coach B Posted October 15, 2009 Report Posted October 15, 2009 Another Easy Schedule for lamar, i don't know why he says this about UT or Aggies if he wants his team to go to regionals for a automatic bid he needs to be playing harder teams. Southland conference has gotten tougher over the last couple of yrs, Sam houston st, UTSA, texas St are ahead of lamar rightnow. Go look at there schedules SOS from last yr and look what type of teams they play. Texas st. SOS was 102, Sam Houston SOS 83,UTSA SOS 87, Lamar is SOS 202 lol I mean give me a break.
LU Baseball Fan Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 We do play Houston and Rice and Rice has finished higher in the polls than A&M for the past 10 years. U of H is nothing to scoff at either. They traditionally have a strong team. Yes it would be nice to play A&M or Texas but I stand behind G's decision to not play if they do not return the home game to us. However, it may be in the future we may have to give in to get these teams back.
Guest baseball25 Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 Lu baseball fan you see clueless. Houston has been struggling lately. Texas st got a automatic bid because they played a tough schedule. If Lamar wins 38 games this year with that schedule and don't win conference they won't get in. Lamar needs to play tcu. Ut.and Baylor instead of hosting rinky dink tournments with teams rpi ranked over a 100 that's gets you know where when you got utsa. Sam. Texas st. Are way ahead of Lamar rightnow because they play a very tough schedule
