Lady Cards sweep Orangefield to stay in thick of 21-3A race

BRIDGE CITY — The Bridge City Lady Cardinals proved Tuesday night the playoff race in District 21-3A is far from over.

Bridge City got a huge night from junior Jordan Royal in a sweep against the rival Orangefield Lady Bobcats.

Royal came up with a match-high 18 kills as Bridge City won 25-22, 25-20 and 25-21.

The win moved Bridge City to 5-3 in the district standings while Orangefield fell to 6-2. Bridge City closes the year out with a match at home Friday against West Orange-Stark before traveling to face Hardin-Jefferson next Tuesday. Orangefield will play host to Silsbee Friday and travel to face Hamshire-Fannett next Tuesday.

Bridge City celebrated Senior Night for Emily Kosh Tuesday as Kosh had a match-high 24 assists with four aces and five digs.

“Tonight was huge,†Kosh said. “We really, really needed this win. We had to play like tonight was the last game. It was special it being Senior Night. I am so proud of this team. I am proud of the win but now it is time to move on.â€

Kosh started to get hot in Game 1 with the Lady Cardinals down 19-12.

Kosh found Royal over-and-over again for points as Bridge City fought back in the game.

Bridge City tied the score at 22-22 after an Orangefield shot went out of bounds.

Royal had two kills in a row to make it 24-22 before another Orangefield hitting error ended Game 1 at 25-22.

Game 2 was just as close as neither team took a big lead.

Kosh put the Lady Cardinals up 18-14 with three straight service points and Orangefield was never able to recover.

The final two Orangefield shots went for errors Bridge City won 25-20.

Orangefield once again took a lead in Game 3 only to see the Lady Cardinals make a comeback.

Bridge City led 19-18 after a Maggie Stump kill which brought Brooklyn Hogden to serve.

By the time Hogden left serve, Bridge City was up 23-19.

Kosh set Sara McPherson for a kill for the match’s final point.

“I knew they could do it,†Bridge City coach Becca Mathews said. “They had to prove it to themselves tonight. They needed a win like this tonight. We still have to stay focused because we can’t have another loss. We have to win out and not take any chances.â€

Kaitlyn Henson led the Lady Bobcats with 12 kills while freshman Rylie Granger put in a team-high 11 assists.

Aimee Scales finished with eight kills and Ashlee Broussard added six assists.

McPherson had eight kills and 10 digs for Bridge City while Allison Angelle had a team-high 11 digs.

Marlee Lopez had six kills for Bridge City, Hogden finished with five kills and Bria Thibodeaux had six digs. Maggie Stump had three kills, three assists and three aces for the Lady Cardinals.
