Just try the Bowtech Destoyer 340 or 350 before you buy.  I was all set to buy a Mathews, but the Bowtechs are sweet!

If you are preset on Mathews, why ask what is best?

Back to reality, there is no such thing as "best". It is extremely subjective based on feel and opinion of the person. Do you want a speed bow? Do you want a smooth bow with a high brace height that is forgiving? Are you looking for a bow that is quiet?

There are several major brands out there that absolutely make awesome bows and most are the equal of each other, according to what aspect you are looking for. A better question might be, what are some good bows in your price range? There are some in the $500-$600 range that are about 90-95% as good (smooth, dead in hands, fast, etc.) as $1,000 bows. Are you limited on funds are or you able to buy the latest and greatest out there?

On the upper end bows, the Mathews Z7 seems to be their hot number right now. The Bowtech Destroyer is getting lots of great reviews and the PSE X-Force has been hot for a couple of years. Hoyt Maxxis has quite a few followers right now.

I've tried the Mathews Monster but I thought it had a pretty agressive draw cycle. It seemed like a pain to shoot. For a couple of feet more a second, it seems to be a hard bow to draw. I would rather opt for one like the Z7 for being a bit smoother and give up about 8 feet per second.

I would really like to try out the Destroyer but maybe not. I hear that it is both extremely fast and extremely smooth. I might start thinking of trading in my current bow which is a very good one also so maybe I had better stay away from the Destroyer. My Diamond Marquis is the equal of any of them..... but I am afraid to try another one just in case..................

Had been braggin on my Benelli Nova 12 ga.pump as up till today has been deadly shooting a spike 1st day last yr.& 2 wild hogs in the 200# range and at 45 yds.knocked them all down w/3 1/2"mag 00 buck.This morning real early had a doe &1 yearling come to the oat patch/corn feeder and a min.later a nice 8 point showed up and was broadside @ 55 yds.so I squeezed off a shot and he went to his knees then jumped up,turned around and ran w/head down.Waited 20 min.to begin the search.Found 1st blood @ 45 yds.a spot here and there & then some heavy blood in a zig/zag pattern turning into a lg.circle and back to drops until no more blood.Looked in circles marking every spot,searhing every briar patch & downed trees from Ike for an hour.Called my son over and he and my wife and my dog looked till noon w/no deer.This was my 1st to ever lose a buck that was hit.It absolutely made me sick.I will take the 243 w/3x9 scope nxt.trip hunting on my property.Makes me wonder if I could have had some not so powerful factory load Winchester 1450 velocity copperplated 15 pellet 00 buck.

Just my opinion but I would never shoot a deer with buckshot at over 15-20 yards. It would be like one of the most unreliable weapons of choice. The same gun with a slug would be a different story.

Buckshot if for up close and personal with not much time to shoot. Even as a police weapon, buckshot is for very close range at a potential moving target.

That's my take on it. It is not the weapon but the ammo choice.

Maybe you'll find the horns when the buzzards start circling.

That is definitely a sickening feeling when you know you've  hit one and can't find it.  I've been there.

Heck w/the horns as long as it's a legal deer.When you killed a plenty it really doesn't do much for me,but that's just me being a Nam vet in 68.I hunt on my 17 ac that has 7 ac.hardwoods(thick) there is a 250 ac lease across 105 from my driveway and 18,000 ac behind me that they had been logging for mos.Reason most times we hunt w/shotgun is my 3 sons hunt too, all in elevated stands and we're prolly 135 yds.apart in a box pattern w.stands on the corners and it normally works out well,except yesterday I was alone lol.

my weapons of choise are the .270, .243, matthew lx compound, and i bought a bob lee recurve 45#. havent connected with the recurve yet  but i like the feel of it.  as far as which gun is the best, i read an article written by a guide  and published in Buckmasters  and he stated that the difference in the distance that the deer ran was only a few yards after being hit in the proper spot with everything from a .243 to a .300 win mag. the advice he gave was to buy  a caliber that you were comfortable shooting and not scared to use. this will allow you to make the proper shot placement and effectively kill the deer. ive seen my boys drop deer in their tracks several times with a .243 and ive seen the same size deer run that i shot with a .270, although they dont go very far. ive been shooting the same .270 since 1984 and i have taken deer out to 450 yards and one coyote at 468 according to my range finder. but i practice long shots in just in case ol big boy wont come in close.

Bought a new Marlin 336 30/30 yesstiddy and cannot wait to get in the climber and give it a go.  Had to give back the one that was given to me about 5 yrs ago ( the son of the previous owner was not happy that dad gave away grandpa's gun without consulting him first) cannot blame him for that. Man it was hard to find one at a reasonable price.  Local Pawn Shops that had them wanted nearly 400.00 for a used gun. Of course it probably had something to do with it being deer season  ;D.. One pawn / gun broker told me that they were moving the Marlin plant and they may not be manufacturing anymore for a while. Bought the last one that Academy had for 353.00 out the door.  Went down to Leger's and was pleasantly surprised how well it grouped shots.  .25-06 has has done it's job so lets see what ole 30/30 can do to put some more meat in the freezer.

I think about half of the bowhunters active today used a PSE Nova (in one of its versions) as a first bow. It is reasonably cheap compared to high end bows and has a smooth draw. It is still a killer.
