Ladies and Gentlemen

Recommended Posts

I have always been curious as to why we refer to HS female teams as Lady Cardinals VB or Lady Bobcats VB, etc, when guys don't even play HS Volleyball in SE Texas?

I have never heard anyone refer to Gentlemen Football, Gentlemen Baseball, Gentlemen Basketball.

Seems like it would be easier to just call them Cardinal VB or Bobcat VB.  Some area female teams have dropped the "Lady" from the uniforms.

I always told my daughter to look like a lady and play like a man.  Just curious, GABE.

I have noticed for years that the BC Cardinals fans have just called the lassies "Cardinals" for a long time---in Softball & Volleyball especially....

However, you find the teams whose mascots are Bulldogs or Hippos etc: tend to add the "Lady" prefix to soften the name...  LOL

There is one thing I miss at BC that was important in the early years of the HS...and that is having everyone SING the National anthem EVERY time it was played!

In these troubled times I think we should again make a positive-- singing-- statement..

Some schools have to put LADY in front of their school name because most school only know FOOTBALL and their is no other sport alive even when these young ladies go to the playoffs they are still not recognized in their respected sports. >:( >:( >:(

When I worked in the sports department at The Enterprise it was a ironclad rule that writers not use "lady" in front of a team's mascot. That included Lamar sports. The idea was that by qualifying the team as a "lady" rather than just the mascot's name we were diminishing the role of women's sports and demeaning to women in general. Yet, the first person to scream bloody murder was the women's volleyball coach at Lamar at the time. "We are the Lady Cardinals!" she said. As far as I know, the rule still stands ... not sure if it's enforced though.

Red,

If you find the use of the Lady preface demeaning, get it changed at your school.  Other schools find it perfectly acceptable.  You are going to have a hard life if you worry about what other people call you.  At HF we just call our girls "District Champions".
