Red Pepper Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 I have always been curious as to why we refer to HS female teams as Lady Cardinals VB or Lady Bobcats VB, etc, when guys don't even play HS Volleyball in SE Texas? I have never heard anyone refer to Gentlemen Football, Gentlemen Baseball, Gentlemen Basketball. Seems like it would be easier to just call them Cardinal VB or Bobcat VB. Some area female teams have dropped the "Lady" from the uniforms. I always told my daughter to look like a lady and play like a man. Just curious, GABE.
East TX Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 I have noticed for years that the BC Cardinals fans have just called the lassies "Cardinals" for a long time---in Softball & Volleyball especially....However, you find the teams whose mascots are Bulldogs or Hippos etc: tend to add the "Lady" prefix to soften the name... LOLThere is one thing I miss at BC that was important in the early years of the HS...and that is having everyone SING the National anthem EVERY time it was played! In these troubled times I think we should again make a positive-- singing-- statement..Comments?
Guest rambleonus Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 I guess you wouldn't have to say "lady" in front of a cougar mascott. It would have to be Gentleman cougars.
scav Posted November 10, 2009 Report Posted November 10, 2009 Some schools have to put LADY in front of their school name because most school only know FOOTBALL and their is no other sport alive even when these young ladies go to the playoffs they are still not recognized in their respected sports. >:( >:( >:(
Red Pepper Posted November 14, 2009 Author Report Posted November 14, 2009 Good comment East TX. I agree completely. Maybe you and I could mention this to Coach Mathews before next season.
gdickert Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 When I worked in the sports department at The Enterprise it was a ironclad rule that writers not use "lady" in front of a team's mascot. That included Lamar sports. The idea was that by qualifying the team as a "lady" rather than just the mascot's name we were diminishing the role of women's sports and demeaning to women in general. Yet, the first person to scream bloody murder was the women's volleyball coach at Lamar at the time. "We are the Lady Cardinals!" she said. As far as I know, the rule still stands ... not sure if it's enforced though. Here are some interesting columns about the issue:USA TODAY COLUMNPENN STATE COLLEGIANLADY VOLS NEWSAnd how about some other controversial mascot musings: (SORRY PN-G, WARREN ...)American Indians: Redskins, Chiefs, Braves, Fighting Illini, etc.NATIVE CIRCLE EDITORIALESPN STORY ON INDIAN MASCOT BANNATIONAL COALITION ON SPORTS AND RACISMAnd then there are the Rebels ... You are going to have a hard life if you worry about what other people call you. At HF we just call our girls "District Champions".
