Free Throws, Turnovers Doom Scotties in Opener
Posted by cmosher 11/9/09 1:11pm
The Highland Community College men’s basketball team dropped the season opener on the road at North Central Missouri College on Wednesday evening by the final of 72-70.

The Scotties played well early, jumping out to a 22-13 lead with six minutes remaining in the first half. The Pirates fought back, but Highland took a 31-25 lead into halftime. In the second half, the Pirates kept the game close and with a run fueled by three consecutive Scottie turnovers, North Central took a six point lead with eight minutes remaining in the contest. Highland regained the lead shortly thereafter and led by as many as three points with just under two minutes remaining. Strong Pirate three-point shooting down the stretch would seal the Scotties fate and hand them their first loss of 2009-10.

“It is especially hard to lose the first game of the season and feel like you beat yourself,” said first-year head coach Jerre Cole. “We left a minimum of 14 points at the free throw line and every chance we had to extend our lead, we turned the ball over. We also can’t give up 47 points in a half and expect to be successful.”

Despite out-rebounding the Pirates by 14 boards (38-24), the Scotties demise would be at the free throw line and their ability to take care of the ball. Highland connected on only 11 of 25 free throw attempts and turned the ball over 23 times.

Freshman Jarmer Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) led the Scotties in scoring with 21 points. Sophomore Rashano McRae (Bronx, NY) and freshman Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, Tex.) both had 14 points each. Freshman Jarvis Benard (Nome, Tex.) had 13 points. McRae led all Scottie rebounders with seven boards. Donahoe had four assists for the game.

“Win or lose, our team desperately needed to play an actual game. The good thing is that it’s now behind us and we can focus on correcting our mistakes,” noted Cole. “We will have to play much better to have a chance at victory against a much improved Hesston team.”

Scottie Men Get First Win
Posted by cmosher 11/11/09 4:03pm Comments 0
The Highland Community College men’s basketball team earned their first victory of the season with a 75-42 win over Region VI D-II foe Hesston College.

The Scotties struggled to score throughout the first half, shooting only 35% from the field, but still took a 31-25 lead into halftime. In the second half, Highland used a combination of defensive pressure and improved shot selection to go on a 28-3 run that essentially ended the game. For the game, the Scotties out-rebounded the Larks 48-33.

The Scotties were led by freshman Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, Tex.) with 19 points along with five assists and four steals. Freshman Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) continued his hot hand with 17 points on seven of ten shooting from the field. Freshman Dominique Davis (Overland Park, Kan.) led all Scotties in rebounds with seven.

“We have really struggled to find any continuity on offense,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “We have a variety of offensive weapons. Unfortunately, we just don’t know how to properly use them yet. It was nice to see some of them come together in the second half.”

The victory improved Highland’s record to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in Region VI D-II play. The Scotties next host Jayhawk Conference East rival Cowley College on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 3 p.m.

Missed Opportunities Result in Scottie Loss
Posted by cmosher 11/16/09 10:16am Comments 0
The Highland Community College men’s basketball team fell to 1-2 overall on Saturday afternoon at home to the Cowley College Tigers by the final of 75-73. The Scotties converted on only 12 of 31 free throw attempts, including their last two in the final minute.

“I hate the cliché of ‘we beat ourselves’,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “Unfortunately, it fits our basketball team right now. In both of our losses, we have been horrific from the free throw line.”

The Scotties came out flat and found themselves playing from behind for most of the first half. Strong play from freshman Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) and sophomore Rashano McRae (Bronx, NY) late in the half gave the Scotties a 27-25 halftime advantage.

In the second half, the Tigers came out strong and eventually built an 11-point lead with less than nine minutes to play. A Scottie surge led by Gulley and freshman Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, Tex.) knotted the game at 67-67. The Tigers had two chances to put the game out of reach with less than a minute to play, but missed free throws gave the Scotties life. With time running out, a Donahoe three-point attempt was off the mark, giving the Tigers the two-point victory.

“We have a lot of room for improvement, and we need to continue our focus on getting better,” noted Cole. “Obviously, we are going to get this issue at the free throw line fixed right away.”

Gulley led Highland with 21 points and six rebounds. Donahoe had 13 points and nine assists in the loss. McRae also contributed 13 points.

The Scotties next play on Wednesday, November 18 at home against Southwestern Community College. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

Just tuned in kjccc.org link to "Scottie Sports" and enjoyed some juco kid's breathless play-by-play as Highland ran on SW Iowa, 81-60.  Feed died before the box score was read, but it sounded like our local kids (Gulley and the three from HJ) were playing great.  Will post box score if I can find it on the web in the  next couple days.

Balanced Attack Gives Scotties Second Win
Posted by cmosher 11/23/09 10:59am Comments 0
The Highland Community College men’s basketball team defeated Southwestern Community College by the final of 81-60 to gain their second win of the season.

The Scotties had five players in double figure scoring en route to a resounding home vicotry. Freshman Jarvis Benard (Nome, Tex.) led all scorers with 15 points. Freshman Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) had 13 points and five assists for the night. Freshman Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, Tex.) contributed with 12 points and eight rebounds. Sophomores Duane Durley (China, Tex.) and Rashano McRae (Bronx, NY) both had double doubles for the game. Durley had 12 points and 10 rebounds while McRae had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

“It was nice to have a game at home where we were able to build a lead and enjoy a comfortable win,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “If we can find a way to continue to have such a balanced attack on offense, we will be a tough team to beat this season.”

Scotties Drop Two in Garden City Classic
Posted by jarnold 11/30/09 11:45pm Comments 0
The Highland Community College men’s basketball team dropped a pair of non-conference games over the weekend in the Garden City Thanksgiving Classic. On Friday, the Scotties fell 79-71 to host Garden City Community College. On Saturday, the Colby Trojans dropped the Scotties 76-72.

In the first game, the Garden City Broncbusters came out on fire, hitting nine of 14 three point attempts while building a 51-31 halftime lead. In the second half, the Scotties fought back, getting as close as five points, before a late technical on head coach Jerre Cole iced the game for the Broncbusters. The Scotties had several chances to cut furthur into the lead, but the shots simply wouldn’t fall.

“Garden City is the best team we have faced all season. They were very good in the first half,” said Cole. “Like we have done so many times already, we fought back hard and if only a made shot here or a call there, who knows. We didn’t do ourselves any favors by missing another 15 free throws.”

Highland was led by freshman Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, Tex.) with 18 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) had 16 points while sophomore Duane Durley (China, Tex.) had 10 points and nine rebounds.

In the Saturday afternoon game, the Scotties took on a Colby Trojan team that entered the game with a 5-4 overall record. The Scotties controlled the game from the tip, building a 10-point cushion, leding 37-27 at halftime.

In the second half, the Scottie lead would peak at 14 points with just over 12 minutes to play. Despite a furious run by the Trojans, the Scotties held a five point lead with three minutes to play but consecutive turnovers and an excessive force foul call with just over a minute to play gave the Trojans their first lead and eventually the win.

“It is difficult to describe the disappointment and frustration that goes with this loss,” said Cole. “We are trying to validate our hard work and efforts with victories and they just are not coming yet. Our room for error is too small for the number of mistakes we continue to make. We have to continue to get better.”

Gulley led all scorers with 30 points. Both Donahoe and freshman Jarvis Benard (Nome, Tex.) had 11 points in the loss.

With the losses, the Scotties fell to 3-6 overall and are currently 0-2 in Jayhawk East Conference play.

The Scotties next host Kansas City Kansas Community College on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 7:00 p.m.

Road Games Continue to Elude Scottie Men
Posted by cmosher 12/7/09 11:49am Comments 0
The road woes continue for the Highland Community College men’s basketball team with a 92-75 loss to Neosho County on Saturday.

The Scotties, 4-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play, fell behind early and trailed 44-28 at the break. Highland pulled within five points with just over nine minutes to play, but a Panther surge again put the lead into double digits. Freshmen Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, Tex.) and Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) both fouled out and the Scotties could never mount another rally.

“We were beat in every facet of the game. They played with more desire, they played harder, they made fewer mistakes, and they wanted to win more than us. It’s very disappointing,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “Our game at Brown Mackie will tell a great deal about who we are as a team.”

The Scotties were led by Donahoe with 17 points and four assists. Freshman Jarvis Benard (Nome, Tex.) had 16 points, while Gulley chipped in 11 points.

The Scotties’ last contest of the first semester is on the road, Wednesday, Dec. 9, against Region VI opponent Brown Mackie. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.

Yeah, it's not looking too good.  Our locals aren't used to -11 degrees and blowing snow.  Hope they are well, and adapt, and play better next semester.  Here's the latest:

How tall is Gulley?
About 6'3" or 6'4" unless he has gotten taller since graduating HS.
Not as tall as James, for sure.
That's some pretty good numbers, for his size, what position is he playing.

I listened to the stream of one of their games, and it sounded like they run a four-guard offense with one big.  Donahoe starts at PG, Jarvis is the 2, Gulley is the 3, some kid from the Bronx is the 4, and Big Woo's the 5.  Lot of southeast Texas up there.  Go Scotties!  Finally, it won't be misspelled if you read the Scotties "kilt" an opponent.

Scottie Men Make History at the Jayhawk Shootout
Posted by jarnold 01/11/10 12:04pm Comments 0
The Highland Community College men’s basketball team made school history with an unprecedented two-game sweep at the annual Jayhawk Shootout. The Scotties defeated a talented Pratt Community College team 71-67 and survived a late rally to down Cloud County Community College 65-63.

On Friday afternoon, the Scotties trailed the Pratt Beavers by 10 points at halftime but used solid second half play from freshman Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) to mount a rally and hold on for the four point win. Gulley led all scorers with 25 points.

Sophomores Rashano McRae (Bronx, NY) and Duane Durley (China, Tex.) both had 11 points each, including a monster dunk by McRae at the final buzzer. McRae led all rebounders with 15 boards. Freshman Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, Tex.) had 10 points and seven assists.

“This win is a testament to how much we have finally matured as a team,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “It has taken a long time, but we are beginning to understand how important it is to play an entire 40 minutes. This was a very good win for our program.”

On Saturday morning, the Scotties took on a long-time rival, the Cloud County Thunderbirds. The Scotties enjoyed a small lead throughout most of the game, including a three point advantage at halftime. Late in the second half, a Cloud County rally gave the Thunderbirds a four point lead with just over a minute to play. Sophomore Thomas Shibeshi (Sugar Land, Tex.) connected on two free throws, and McRae scored on a strong post move to cut the lead to one point. With less than 20 seconds on the clock, the Scotties forced a late turnover that would prove to be disastrous for the Thunderbirds. Coming out of a timeout, McRae was fouled in the paint and connected on both free throws to give the Scotties a 64-63 advantage. He then took a charge with six seconds to play to end any chance for Cloud County. Donahoe hit one of two free throws to end scoring.

“We really struggled to get any flow going on offense the entire game,” noted Cole. “Cloud is tough and defensive-minded and they make you work for every point. We beat a solid basketball team.” McRae led all scorers with 18 points. Freshman Jarvis Benard (Nome, Tex.) had 14 points while Durley and Donahoe both had 10 points each.

The Scotties, 6-9 overall and 1-3 in the Eastern Division, host the Coffeyville Ravens on Wednesday, January 13th. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

Dang, a two-point loss.  Donahoe's doing good (20 points off 10 shots, 3/4 3s, 7 assists, 4 TO, 4 steals), but Benard and Gulley are in a bit of a shooting slump.

Just listened to a live webcast of the Highland Scotties beating defending national champs (and Jayhawk Conference foe) Johnson County CC, 72-67.  Gulley with 19, Jarvis 16, Durley 13, Donahoe 1 (?).  It was 28-28 at the half.  Scotties rallied from 11 down late to win it.  Good quality win at home for our Scotties.  Will post stats when they're available.

Strong Second Half Gives Scotties Seventh Win
Posted by jarnold 01/24/10 11:20pm Comments 0
The Highland Community College men’s basketball team used a strong second half to put the reigning NJCAA Division II National Champion Johnson County away by the final of 72-67.

The Scotties led throughout the first half but had to settle for a 28-28 tie at halftime. In the second half, Johnson County raced out to an early eight point lead but a Scottie press proved to be too much for the Cavaliers and Highland pulled away for the win.

“We will never give a victory back, but there are some serious issues that have began to resurface, such as our free throw shooting,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “We have a small break right now which couldn’t come at a better time. We need to rest and get healthy for this last month of the season.”

The Scotties were led by freshman Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) with 19 points. Freshman Jarvis Benard (Nome, Tex.) had 16 points. The Scotties sophomore big men both had strong outings. Rashano McRae (Bronx, NY) had 14 points and 15 rebounds while Duane Durley (China, Tex) had 13 points.

Highland is now 7-12 overall and 2-6 in Jayhawk East play.

The Scotties next play at home on Wednesday, January 27 at 7 p.m. against Fort Scott C.C.
