Highland mounted one rally that cut the Red Raven lead to four points with ten minutes to play, but poor transition defense and costly turnovers ended any chance at a comeback. “Our approach to this game was like our approach to practice on Friday,†said head coach Jerre Cole. “We have some guys that think they can just show up and the game will be easy. We found out tonight that is not the case. We need to get back to honoring the values that had us playing so well.†The Scotties were led by freshman Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, Tex.) with 20 points. Sophomore Rashano McRae (Bronx, NY) had 13 points and five rebounds. Highland will return to the confines of Allen Field House for a pair of home games. The Scottie defense that was so strong against Fort Scott failed to show up. Johnson County blistered the nets, connecting on 60% of their field goals. The Cavaliers used a late rally to take a 40-36 halftie lead and quickly pulled away from the Scotties in route to the win. The loss drops the Scotties to 13-15 overall and more importantly, 2-3 or third place in Region VI D-II play. The Scotties must now return to Johnson County on February 27 for the first round of the playoffs. “We let a great opportunity slip away,†said head coach Jerre Cole. “We stressed the importance of playing well and what was at stake, but we simply did not fight like a team that wants to make a mark this season.†Freshman Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) led the way for the Scotties with 23 points. Freshman Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, Tex.) had 10 points and nine assists. Highland will complete the three-game road trip with a Saturday contest against Region VI Division II rival Hesston College. The Scotties, currently ranked 12th in NJCAA Division II, struggled to find rhythm all game on Friday night against the Brown Mackie Lions. Highland had plenty of opportunities to secure the victory late in the second half but lacked the appropriate defensive intensity and simply could not stop the Lions offensive attack. In overtime, the Scotties took a one-point lead with just 10.3 seconds to play. The Lions traveled the length of the floor and got fouled on the shot which led to a made free throw and a 92-90 Brown Mackie win. Highland was led by sophomore Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) with 39 points. Freshman De’Andre Upchurch (Flint, Mich.) had 28 points in the loss. “We lacked focus and energy,†said head coach Jerre Cole. “It was very disappointing that we did not travel any better with such an important game on the line. We have a couple guys that we are counting on that are not competing on an appropriate level.†On Saturday, the Scotties looked to rebound with a road match-up against the Hesston College Larks. Highland came out hot in the first half and built a 46-36 halftime lead. In the second half, the Scotties dominance continued as they outscored the Larks by 15 points for a 97-72 vicotry. Upchurch and Gulley once again led the Scotties with 23 and 21 points respectively. Freshman Phil Henry (Marlton, NJ) had 19 points. “We are experiencing a lot of system slippage right now due to all the games and lack of practice,†noted Cole. “We need to take some time off and then get back to work.†The Scotties, 6-2 overall, next travel to Leavenworth, Kan., for a Monday night game against the University of St. Mary’s Junior Varsity. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.

setxslam Posted December 7, 2010 Author Report Posted December 7, 2010 Scotties too much for Allen CountyPosted by jarnold 12/5/10 9:38pm Comments 0 The Highland Community College men’s basketball team used a strong first half to hold on for an important road win over the Allen County Red Devils by the final of 73-62. The Scotties were dominating on both sides of the ball on Saturday night in building a 40-22 halftime lead. The Scotties only allowed five total field goals the entire half. We have the tools to play with anyone, but we need to learn how to play at our intensity rather than our opponents.†Freshman De’Andre Upchurch (Flint, Mich.) led the Scotties with 19 points. Freshman center Antonio Walker (Dublin, Ga.) had a solid game with 14 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) added 13 points despite constant foul-trouble. Freshmen De’Andre Upchurch (Flint, Mich.) and Antonio Walker (Dublin, Ga.) both had 13 points in the victory. “In our pre-season meeting, we discussed what would be an acceptable win-loss record for our team at the Christmas break and we came up with 11-3. Not saying that we prophesied a great semester, but we beat the teams we should beat and lost a couple tough games,†said head coach Jerre Cole. “I really feel that we can get a lot better and play a factor in the Jayhawk East Conference race. We are just scratching the surface of how well we could play this year.†The Scotties have a long break before returning to the court. They next travel to Neosho County Community College on Wednesday, Jan. 5 for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off.
setxslam Posted December 13, 2010 Author Report Posted December 13, 2010 I missed this, from two games ago:Scotties Dominate the Larks for 10th WinPosted by jarnold 12/12/10 11:22pmThe Highland Community College men’s basketball team used a dominating first half to put away the Hesston College Larks by the final of 85-69.Highland outscored Hesston 39-26 in the first half and used their lead to rest some key players in the second half for the big game on Saturday. The Scotties were led by the outstanding performance of freshman De’Andre Upchurch (Flint, Mich.) who scored 32 points on 6-10 shooting from the arc. Freshman Antonio Walker (Dublin, Ga.) continued his strong inside play with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore point guard Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, Tex.) had seven assists to just one turnover. “This is the kind of game that you simply want to get through without an injury and hopefully gain some momentum for the rest of the weekend,†said head coach Jerre Cole. “We spent so much time on the road in November that we have struggled to play well at home. This was by far our best home performance.†The Scotties, 10-3 overall, host Brown Mackie College on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 3:00 p.m. The Lions defeated the Scotties by the final of 91-89 in overtime in their first meeting.
setxslam Posted February 15, 2011 Author Report Posted February 15, 2011 Our locals have been snowed under up there in northeast Kansas:Road Trips Not Favorable For Scottie MenPosted by cmosher 02/14/11 11:05amThe Highland Community College men’s basketball team found life on the road in the Jayhawk East tough going this past week, dropping two conference games. On Wednesday, the Scotties fell to Kansas City Kansas by the final of 91-72. On Saturday, Highland couldn’t hold their lead and lost in the final two minutes to Coffeyville by the score of 100-95. At KCKCC, the Scotties looked to avenge the earlier overtime loss to the Blue Devils. In the first half, Highland took an early lead, but the talented KCK team was too much to hold back and the Blue Devils took a 45-38 halftime lead. In the second half, the game remained tight until five minutes to play when KCK took over and finished off the Scotties. Sophomore Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, TX) led the Scotties with 22 points. Freshman De’Andre Upchurch (Flint, MI) was the only other Highland player in double figures with 19 points. “This was the first time all season that we let another team get away from us,†said head coach Jerre Cole. “I think we have de-conditioned some. We seemed to hit a wall and couldn’t recover from it. We had better get ourselves prepared for Coffeyville or expect the same conclusion.†On Saturday, the Scotties seemed to be reborn as they raced out to a 21-point halftime lead over the Coffeyville Red Ravens. In the second half, the Red Ravens full court pressure and long range shooting allowed them to quickly chip away at the lead. The Scotties had a run with seven minutes to play, but they simply could not stop Coffeyville and lost the lead with a minute to play. Gulley led the way with 44 points and 16 rebounds. Upchurch had 24 points while sophomore Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, TX.) had 10 assists and nine points. “This was a devastating loss. To blow such a large lead on the road at a place like Coffeyville is hard to take,†said Cole. “We keep talking about earning a signature win and getting this trend of playing well but not finishing games behind us. Unfortunately, we will have to wait for another opportunity. On a positive note, we played our best basketball of the season in the first half. We proved we can still do it if we want to.†The Scotties next host Johnson County on Wednesday, February 16 at 7:00 p.m.
