The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team moved their record to 8-0 and took the top spot in the Region XIV South Zone after posting a 67-65 home victory Saturday over Lon Morris College, the 2009 regular season conference champion.

The unbeaten Seahawks opened the game with an 8-0 run and pulled to an 18-point lead by midway through the first half.

Lon Morris slowly cut the margin and trailed by seven points, 41-34, at halftime.

The second half featured some of the most exciting basketball in Lamar State history with the Seahawks holding the lead until a minute remained, when the Bearcats pulled ahead by one point only to lose in the final seconds.

Lamar State had three players in double figures, led by freshman forward Leviante “Gore” Davis with 17 points. Sophomore forward Ahyaro Phillips, who was called for two technical fouls, hit for 17 points while freshman guard Keenan Doyle added 13.

Jorge Redmon led Lon Morris with 19 points. Antoine Brown had 17 for the Bearcats.

Lamar State won the game with superb free-throw shooting, connecting on 12 of 14 from the charity stripe. The Seahawks were hitting .625 percent of their free throws going into the game.

Lon Morris, which was picked to win the Region XIV title, goes to 5-3 after losing their last two games.

Lamar State will be on the road Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game at conference rival San Jacinto College, which currently is ranked just outside the Top 20 junior college teams in the nation.
