Lamar State College-Port Arthur head softball coach Vance Edwards shored up his defense for the 2010 spring season this past Thursday, when he signed catcher/utility player Courtney Grable, a 2009 graduate of Central Christian Academy in Houston.

“Courtney is an excellent addition to our team,” Edwards said. “She will back up starting catcher Samantha Lunceford, and she has good experience playing in the infield and outfield for her high school and for her summer team, the Texas Starz 18-under Black.”

Lamar State competes in Region XIV, one of the toughest Division I conferences in the National Junior College Athletic Association.

The Seahawks begin their 2010 schedule Feb. 4, when they host perennial powerhouse Temple College for a doubleheader at Martin Field.

Edwards is looking for more players, especially pitchers and catchers, for the spring and for the 2010-11 academic year.

He will hold a Dec. 12 open tryout day for high school juniors and seniors and students now enrolled at Lamar State or planning to attend the college.

The tryouts are set for 9-11 a.m. at Martin Field, 1000 Lakeshore Drive on the Lamar State campus.

Interested players are asked to download a Tryout Registration form from the Softball page of the college website (www.lamarpa.edu), fill out the form and follow the instructions for returning it to the college.

Players also are asked to fill out and submit the on-line Prospective Student/Athlete form on the Athletics page of the college website.
