The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team had a week off after losing by 19 points on the road last Tuesday to No. 11-ranked San Jacinto College.

The young 8-1 Seahawks also took off the first half of tonight’s home conference game against Angelina College, as they stumbled with bad shot selection and feeble defense to trail the Roadrunners by 14 points, 45-31, at halftime.

Angelina pulled to a 21 point lead by midway through the second half. But Lamar State slowly cut into the lead, tied the game at the four-minute mark and took the lead briefly a minute later.

The Seahawks may have waited too long to wake up in this contest as the Roadrunners rallied in the final seconds to win, 78-75, and move their record to 6-7 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Lamar State slips to 8-2 on the season and 1-2 in Region XIV action.

Five Seahawks scored in double figures, led by freshman forward Leviante Davis with 13 points. Demetrius Ford, Kavon Rose, Ahyaro Phillips and Gordon Ball each had 12 points for Lamar State.

Adrick McKinney led Angelina with 20 points, while Ron Stewart added 13 points and Takoby Jackson had 11.

Lamar State has three games left in 2009, including a conference game at Blinn College in Brenham (Dec. 5).

The Seahawks also will play non-conference contests at Delgado Community College in New Orleans (Dec. 7) and at Lone Star College-Tomball (Dec. 12) before taking off for the holidays.

Lamar State returns to action to begin the year at home Jan. 4 against Delgado, followed two days later with a home conference game with Jacksonville College.
