Guest GoStangs Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 From The Beaumont Enterprise: Mustangs steamroll Longhorns By JARED AINSWORTH, Special to The Enterprise 09/30/2006 Updated 09/30/2006 01:11:57 AM CDT HAMSHIRE - Nothing changed Friday for a West Orange-Stark football team that has yet to lose a district game since stepping down to Class 3A in 2004. The Mustangs were in their usual form of dominance against Hamshire-Fannett, as they rolled to a 54-0 win in what was the 2006 District 22-4A opened for both teams. The mood in Hamshire hit a serious note early in the contest when Longhorns quarterback Randall Courville was injured on his team's first offensive play of the game. Courville suffered a severe concussion when tackled on a quarterback sneak, and the junior was taken off by stretcher before being air-lifted by helicopter to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital from the high school. "I thought we played good," WO-S coach Dan Hooks said. "We had a week off, and you never know how you're going to come back and our kids came back and really played well. I couldn't be any more pleased with them. We didn't get anyone hurt, our defense played hard, we had a pretty good kicking game, and I don't think we punted the football." The victory for the Mustangs (4-0 and 1-0) improves their district record to 11-0 since moving down to 3A before the 2004 season. Senior quarterback Andre Bevil led WO-S with 15-of-19 passing for 225 yards and four touchdowns. Wideout Jacoby Franks benefited most from the Mustangs' passing attack, as the senior recorded six catches for 119 yards and one TD. In the second half, Franks stepped in at quarterback and went 3-of-4 for 21 yards and rushed for another 55 yards and one TD on the ground. The Mustangs started early, as they mounted a 33-0 lead by halftime and held the Longhorns (2-2 and 0-1) to just 75 yards of offense throughout the contest. "It was a team effort, and I was really proud of our defense versus the run," Hooks said. "That's what has bothered us in the past and they really did well." West Orange-Stark began its scoring surge on the sixth offensive play of the contest where Bevil connected with Franks down the right sideline for a 56-yard TD. After forcing H-F to punt on the ensuing possession, WO-S reached the end zone with an 11-yard run by running back DePauldrick Garrett. The Longhorns again went four-and-out on their following possession, and Bevil reached Earl Thomas on a 26-yard TD to give the Mustangs a 21-0 lead with 1:54 remaining in the first quarter. And the Mustangs would never let up from that point forward. Garrett finished with 105 yards on 15 carries for a WO-S football team that will play host to Kirbyville next Friday. Hamshire-Fannett, meanwhile, will play at Hardin-Jefferson next Friday. "It was a good football game and now we've got to get ready for a tough Kirbyville team," Hooks said. "We're in district play and we've got to keep going."
