Meadow Heights, Missouri: Homecoming could not have been much sweeter for the Meadow Heights boys basketball team.

The Panthers drained a state-record 36 3-pointers in a 131-66 win against visiting Marquand on Friday night.

The feat also may have also set a national record. According to information on the National Federation of High Schools and other Web sites, Juniata Valley High School of Alexandria, Pa., set the national record with 34 3s, accomplished in January 2002.

Meadow Heights, which defeated Marquand on the road 88-56 in mid-December, previously was tied with Scott City for the state record with 24. Meadow Heights accomplished its feat against Zalma in 2003-04 while Scott City set the record against Tamms Egyptian of Illinois in 1997.

"I thought 24 was amazing," Meadow Heights coach Tom Brown said. "We did it two years ago, and I never thought we've get close again.

"I hate it that we hit that many, but what do you do? Tell your kids to miss?"

The Panthers were 36 of 73 (49 percent) from beyond the arc, which was better than their 33 percent performance from the free throw line (3 for 9).

Meadow Heights hit 13 of its first 16 3-pointers, and ended the game with only 10 2-point baskets. Four of its players had at least five 3s, led by Michael Collier with eight, and four players had at least 20 points.

The continuous clock mercy rule took effect in the fourth quarter.

"We backed into a zone and subbed the whole time," said Brown. "What do you do? It's homecoming, and the kids are fired up anyway. It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing.

"We're happy about the record. We had six seniors, and it's their last hurrah. To make 36 3s in a game is not that easy."

NOTE: This is a class A school with less than 200 students in high school.
