Dawson senior Darian Lazard has been busy with a couple of recent moves, going from football to basketball, and from Utah to the University of Houston.

After quarterbacking the Eagles to the Class 4A Division I state semifinals, Lazard is slowly-but-steadily transforming into basketball shape, and it's a familiar transition he's made since junior high.

But it's a tradition that stops next season during what will be his freshman football season at the University of Houston.

Lazard's original plans were to play at Utah, but that changed last month.

“I wanted to be closer to home,” he said. “Closer to my family, and to my other family at Dawson.

“Plus, I really like what (UH) coach (Kevin) Sumlin and everyone is doing, and even though I'll primarily be a receiver, they said they'll try to get the ball in my hands as often as possible, like on punt returns and possibly in the Wildcat offense.”

But for now, Lazard's top priority is to help get Dawson in the basketball playoffs while teamming up with fellow seniors Anthony Miles (leading scorer at 17.3) and Craig Grigsby (15.4).

“It was tough after starting late because of football, but I'm getting there,” Lazard said.” I'm a very competitive person, and it helps playing with great players like Anthony Miles.

“He's our captain and it's just amazing what he can do out there.”

The Eagles, who dropped a 51-43 District 24-4A-opening decision to Angleton last week, are in action at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Brazosport
