The Goose Creek Memorial boys basketball team improved their record to 11-7 overall and 2-1 in district Friday night. The Patriots defeated the Cougars 56-44.

Crosby coach Edwin Egans attributed the loss to missed free-throws.

“We went 11-of-27 from the free-throw line,” he said. “That really doesn’t represent our team well. We just need to get back to practice.”

De Jon Wade led the Patriots with 11 points and Pedro Alvarez scored 10.

Leading the Cougars in scoring was Tenarius Mills with 12 and M.J Mathis with 10.

The first quarter ended with a 7-6 score in favor of the Patriots but looked like it would be a low scoring game.

The Cougars opened up the second quarter by scoring 10 straight points and didn’t allow the Cougars to get a bucket until 1:43 was left in the half.

That’s when Addison Guerra ended the streak and started a new one as the Cougars went on to score 10 straight points before going to thelocker room. The halftime score was 17-16 Memorial.

Memorial was up by four points going into the fourth where they had a strong finish, scoring 21 points in the final quarter to seal the victory.

“This was a great win for our program,” Patriots coach Jeff Keener said. “Crosby is a playoff team and it’s one step in the right direction.”

Keener said he’s proud of his team but for the big win but says it’s already time to look towards the next game.

“We didn’t get up and celebrate afterwards,” he said. “We got up and shook hands and that’s because we can’t get caught up in one game. It is a big win for us but we still have a lot of ground to cover.”

The Patriots are set to hit the road to take on Barbers Hill at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and the Cougars are set to host Dayton on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
