Is No. 5 Yates showing bad sportsmanship in its lopsided wins? by ESPN Rise's Ronnie Flores

No. Before you think we're insensitive to running up scores or don't care about sportsmanship, allow us to explain. Unbalanced scores happen every week in high school basketball, especially on the girls' side. Yates (Houston, Texas), No. 5 in the ESPN RISE FAB 50, just happens to be a deep, press-oriented team whose third line of players (10-15) is talented. Many of the nation's top teams just came off competitive holiday tournaments, and it's usually blowout city for the top teams when league/conference play starts. Coach Greg Wise would never tell his players to go half speed, and you can bet the bench players are trying to do everything in their power to earn minutes for tight games down the line. The Yates-Lee game produced national headlines because the Lions' point total set a single-game state record (170) and because of the bad blood that brewed in the second half. In fact, we think the referees' decision to not allow substitutions after the rhubarb was worse than Wise's decision to keep the foot on the gas.

Hogwash!
Why? Have you ever been involved (played?)with a talented team with 8-10 talented players deep? Those same players coming off the bench play the same skill sets as the starters. They play just as hard or maybe even harder when their chance comes.

No. Never have. However, I have been around high school athletics long enough to know that it's complete hogwash.

How many 2 deep teams have you been "involved" or played with? Why would that make your opinion any more valuable?

You can "color it" anyway you want, if a team is still pressing after being up by 100-12 at half, they are intentionally running up the score and showing a lack of respect and class.

When I say "they", I am meaning the Yates coach in particular.
Stop trying to color it :D Yates is going for a record because they have the talent to do so. It's just that black and white ;)

Call it what you want, I did not write the article.  The first Article is very good, the second statement is just input from another article. However, the sensitivity in todays sports kills me.  The sports were created with the gladiator type of mind-set.  Absolute domination and survival.  Football, basketball, track, etc. you name it and it is all about dominating the opposing team.  I for one believe in demoralizing a team and sending messages to future opponents. Having played sports I remember how demoralizing it was to have someone "call off the dogs" and completely stop playing.  It was like they are so much better than us that they could put the waterboy in, that is [glow=red,2,300]more[/glow] embarrassing IN MY OPINION.  PITY is the true demoralizer!

You are correct. I too feel PITY. Just not for the same people you do.
Stupid is as stupid does.

Sir, I know that you are not calling me names because trust me when I tell you that you are not built like that!  Stay in your place and this will be friendly internet chatter! Other than that don't even address me!

It would have been nice to back off, but they did not.  SO! It is what it is.  The district did not take any action and the show goes on.  I hope they show more pity in the future so that the moral police can back off a little.  Personally, I could care less about final scores, I am all about W's and L's.  And I wish my team had more of the W's this year.  I hate being below .500.  Go Jags!

For what it is worth is here is my 2 cents..........

These kids are doing what they are told so anyone bashing them needs to stop.  If you want to bash someone bash the coach.  Some people believe he is self promoting.  Whatever you want to call it the guy is winning.  However, this day in age there is so many bad things going on with kids and coaches especially in this part of Houston and this coach is positively effecting these kids lives by teaching them to work hard at all times and never stop.  If this team is truly as deep as it is it is not fair to ask the kids at the end of the bench to not play hard and not do the same things that they bust their butts in every day in practice and all year long to prepare.  There will be a games in the playoffs where they will look back at everytime they continued to play hard for the entire game and it will be beneficial to them.  This is a philosophy that these kids buy in to and it will not only help them in their run at a state title and national championship but it will help them in life. When you have a philosophy like this you don't see a score on the scoreboard or a time on the clock.  You play hard from start to finish and there are no ifs and or buts about it.  Many people go back to HJ in 91 and 92 and go ahead and look at those kids success in life.  It is like no other high school basketball team you have ever seen.  So before you criticize them let us all remember that teams like this are very rare and as a coach when you have them you do what you can to make sure they never stop becuase with kids this talented it is easy to turn it off and if they turn it off at the wrong time it could  be a chance missed for them.

Just making sure... I did not say I was going to attack you at all, I said don't address me if you need to call me names.  And if you were calling me names the "built like that" is because I know you would not say that in person.

I apologize for the misunderstanding.

You are correct in saying that I would not call you "stupid" to your face if I did not know you personally. I am not built like that. But, if we were having this conversation face-to-face, I would still have the same convictions.

We will agree to disagree. Best of luck to the Jags on the remainder of the schedule. Working at Baytown Sterling, I have seen my fair share of sub .500 seasons. They are never fun.

More than you fair share... The last good team you guys had was the one led by Hipolito (spelling?) That kid could flat out play.  I think he graduated in 2000.  You guys were a tough out then!
Yes sir, Richard could play! He played some at Lee College, but I have lost contact with him since. Last years team should have been much better. Too many distractions. Just wish they would break that 20+ years playoff drought.

Good post Karma...I'm trying hard to understand the mindset and although I do not agree with what the COACH did I certainly understand the logic, I saw them play this weekend on TV, undoubtably the best highschool basketball team I have ever seen, those kids can fly.

I cannot say that I agree or disagree with what the coach has done because I do not know WHY he is doing it.  If he is indeed doing it because he wants his kids to buy in to a philosophy and never stop(this is why I believe he is doing it) than I applaud him because never stopping in the real world brings huge success and will teach these kids huge lessons in life.  If he is doing it to promote himself than I disagree with it.  I believe and have to believe he is doing it for the kids.

Also, this is one of those deals that until you are a part of something like it than it is hard to understand why they do it.  Once you are a part of something like this you understand it.
