Guest coachacola Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 Before coaching his first football game at Lamar University offensive coordinator Tommy Mainord has decided to take a job at Texas Tech. Head coach Ray Woodard confirmed this with Fox 4 this afternoon, saying he'll immediately start a search for his replacement. Mainard's dad Carlos was a safeties coach at Texas Tech for six years before retiring on Wednesday.http://setxhomepage.com/content/fulltext/?cid=79982
AggiesAreWe Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 Would this be worse by leaving before you have ever coached a game compared to what Lane did by leaving after only one year? ;D
lu cards Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 best to get rid his a s s now before the season gets close.would hate to lose him but png head coach would be a good fit at lamar.

Guest coachacola Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 Sounds like his dad got him the job a Texas Tech.

Guest coachacola Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 It says his dad retired. I heard that Tuberville wasn't planning on hiring his own staff, so I'm thinking Carlos Mainord asked Tuberville to hire his son. I bet it's a nice raise from the $60K or so he was making at LU.

At least he doesn't have guys that are transferring to Divison III schools because they can't play at this level, or not yet at least.

Not sure if the original OC left because of the Leach situation, but he's retained a couple assistants and let go a few also.

Congrats to Coach Mainord for getting the job of a life time.

There was no offensive coordinator. Leach was the offensive coordinator. For the Alamo Bowl, Lincoln Riley assumed those duties, but he was the WRs coach.
Guest coachacola Posted January 16, 2010 Report Posted January 16, 2010 From the Beaumont Enterprise:
The ripple of college football coaches changing jobs touched Lamar University on Friday, when offensive coordinator Tommy Mainord left LU for an undetermined assistant coaching position at Texas Tech. The move came just before the Cardinals were set to welcome recruits to campus for weekend visits, but LU coach Ray Woodard said the loss of a key assistant should not heavily impact recruiting."I'm happy for him," Woodard said. "I want coaches that other people want. That's the way it happens sometimes. Coaches are going to move for a different opportunity. I was fortunate to have him for a year and a half."

With Lamar, Mainord installed a spread-style offense similar to the kind run for several seasons at Tech under Leach. The team practiced Mainord's offense during 10 weeks of fall practices. Mainord coached running backs and wide receivers for three seasons at Sam Houston State before Lamar hired him.

"We decided we want to run this type of offense, and we won't change our offense this fall," said Woodard, who added that the new coordinator "doesn't have to be a clone" of Mainord."We won't change the offense or the philosophy at this point," Woodard added. "We'll get a very good coach in here in a short period of time, and at the same time we'll take enough time to make sure we get the right person."
http://www.beaumontenterprise.com/sports/local/lu_football_assistant_leaves_for_texas_tech_job.html

Hopefully LU can find another good one in their next offensive coordinator.
