Central linebacker William Jones on Saturday became the area's first player in this year's recruiting class to verbally commit to Lamar University.

The 6-foot, 200-pound Jones helped lead Central to back-to-back playoff appearances in 2008 and 2009 where it lost to Friendswood both years.

"They took me out to lunch and after we ate they took me back to campus and they offered me," said Jones, who also had offers from Division II schools Tarleton State and West Texas A&M. "So I said 'yes' right after they offered."

Jones, 18, said on Sunday that he and two other players, a punter from Waco and a long snapper from Houston, were also offered at the same time.

Though no one from Lamar was available for comment on Sunday, nobody from the school can comment on a high school player until they sign on National Signing Day on Feb. 3.

Until then, Jones can change his mind because a verbal commitment is a non-binding agreement.

Jones became the fourth Central player to verbally commit to a school. Linebacker Jacoby Hale committed to Utah in February while receiver Keenan Holman committed to SMU in September. Central coach Andrew Washington said Monday that defensive back Tevin Broussard committed to Blinn.
