Wednesday is national signing day as some local high school football players are ready to sign up to play ball at the college level next fall.

Lee offensive linemen Xavier Ruben and Tim Smith have each been offered a scholarship to play at Baylor and could be the only area players to go with a major college team this year.

But signing day will be big for a number of other area players as well.

Goose Creek Memorial quarterback Cody Larson will be attending Concordia University in Seward, Neb. Concordia is a small NCAA Division II private school.

Patriot Offensive lineman Darrell Clarke will be signing with Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, Okla.

“Darrell is a good athlete,” GCM coach Bret Boyd said. “They’re (Northwestern Oklahoma) getting a good one.

“I have no doubt they will both do well in the classroom and on the football field. It’s just like anything else, you start at one level and work your way up.”

Concordia also showed interest in GCM receiver Pat Wood, but no decision has been made yet on his part.

Also at Lee High School, West Texas A&M is looking at defensive back Trey Murray and running back Dandrick Jackson. An official announcement on where they will play next is scheduled to be made early Wednesday morning.

Sterling coach Herb Minyard said the Rangers are expecting no signings Wednesday. He said safety Andre Corley has drawn the most interest from recruiters.

Dayton defensive tackle Tony Hill has already enrolled at Stephen F. Austin State University after giving his verbal commitment to the Lumberjacks last fall.

Hill was a three-year starter who played all four years on varsity. He played in 17 playoff games through his high school career.

According to Dayton head coach Jerry Stewart, quarterback Payton Ploch is being recruited University of New Mexico and Lamar University, but Stewart expects him to land at Lamar.

“Ploch is being recruited as an athlete,” Stewart said. “He’s going to be very versatile. He’s a kid that flew under the radar. We could have put him over there at safety all the time and he’d have been lethal.”

Crosby defensive back M.J. Mathis intends to sign with Kilgore College. Crosby coach Kevin Flanigan believes that will be a good fit for him.

“He’s a big physical kid,” Flanigan said. “He has great attitude. He is great to be around. He can run and is capable of making big plays.

“In the Bay City game, he had three interceptions in the first half. I think he’ll be great at the next level.”

Barbers Hill offensive and defensive lineman Tim Barton is looking to sign with Kansas Wesleyan.

Baytown Christian Academy’s Sam Peacock plans to take part in the walk-on program at Lamar University.
