NEDERLAND —  NEDERLAND — The Nederland Bulldogs dropped an 8-7 decision to West Brook and then fell 8-5 in an eight-inning, epic struggle against the Bridge City Cardinals Friday night at their annual tournament, which continues today at noon.

At 2-2 in the tournament, Nederland will square off with C.E. King (1-3) at 12 p.m. for the consolation game. The championship matchup between BC and West Brook, who are both 3-0-1, is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.

Credit the Bulldogs for a gutsy comeback, however. The Cardinals owned a 4-0 lead until Nederland batted around for four runs in the fifth inning to the tie game.

BC scratched for a run in the top of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead after Dylan Mulhollan drove in Matt Menard. Nederland pitcher Anthony Hammond worked out of that jam with minimal damage, as BC left two runners in scoring position.

The Bulldogs responded quickly in the bottom half, picking up a lead off double from Tyler Smith, who was driven home on a single from Stephen Schlett.

After Jacob Pitts drew a walk, Carson Raines, who had two strikes on him, laid down a bunt-single to load the bases with no outs.

Making a Babe Ruth-like appearance, Kirby Bellow, who will run or pitch in a game until March 10, entered just needing to hit the ball somewhere in the outfield.

The plan backfired, however, as he hit a chopper to BC's Matt Hicks at shortstop. Hicks fielded and threw home for the first out. After a great deal of confustion, the Cardinals realized Bellow was not running and threw him out at first base for the second out.

Then they came back to the plate to catch Pitts, who was trying to slip in the winning run, for the third out. In the end, it was a 6-2-3-2 triple play.

The Cardinals then picked up three runs on five walks and a fielder's choice to take the final lead of the game at 8-5.

In the bottom half, Nederland managed two-out singles from Cody Laird and Nick Cardenas but the contest came to a close on a 6-to-4 put out.

Against the Bruins, Nederland, now 5-4 on the year, scored five runs in the third inning to take a 5-3 lead. West Brook tied in top of the fourth with two runs but the Bulldogs jumped back on top with two runs in the fifth to go up 7-5.

But three Nederland errors led to a three run-sixth inning for the Bruins.
