BEAUMONT – Anthony Wilkins, a first-team New Jersey All-State selection in 2009, has signed a scholarship agreement with Lamar University, increasing the Cardinals’ 2010 spring recruiting class to 19.

A 6-foot-5, 340-pound offensive lineman, Wilkins played last season at St. Peter’s Prep School in Newark, N.J. He helped his team finished third in the final state rankings, and he was honored as the Offensive Lineman of the Year on the 2009 All-Hudson County Team.

“Anthony is a big offensive lineman with great feet,” said Ray Woodard, Lamar’s head coach. “He fits perfectly into one of our need areas, and we’re excited to have him join our program.”

Which coach is recruiting in New Jersey?  Seriously, he seems like a good pickup for LU.

Couldn't find anything about him, but he's a big guy. Needs to lose about 40 lbs though.. but I'll trust Coach if he said he has good feet.

Yeah, playing on the line at 340+ is ruff, but I am sure a strength and conditionning program will do him well to loosing 20-30 lb's.

I found this Scout profile on him:  http://rutgers.scout.com/a.z?s=183&p=8&c=1&nid=3333560

He's listed at 280 pounds, he must have gained a few since then.

Also St. Peter's looks like a pretty good program.  http://spprep.org/Football

Rivals gives him 2 stars:  http://rivals.yahoo.com/njhoops/football/recruiting/player-Anthony-Wilkens-86583

September 10, 2008 Evaluation from Rivals:

STRENGTHS: Wilkens is massive and uses his size well in the running game. He can wear down opponents with his size and power.

WEAKNESSES: He needs to lose weight and get in better condition. He'd be better off playing around 310 or 315 pounds, which would help his mobility.

Hopefully he is a real sleeper who slipped through the cracks.  Looks like we could have gotten a couple of those.  Real anxious to see how Woodard and the program develops over the next few years.  Wouldn't that be the bomb if we went 6-5 the first year with a sleeper win or two!

this guy will be solid if he can drop 30-40 lbs.. Tell you what, he's going to be hating the Coaching staff come this summer. New diet, hard hard work out plan, etc.. It'll all pay off though. These are the kinds of guys that get drafted, because they have so much more muscle in that fat. No offense to him of course, but if he works hard enough, he'll be a big contributor.

Agreed, it all depends on his work ethic though. Congrats to Anthony though, he is going to be a long way from home.

As another athlete away from home, if you're away.. You're away. Doesn't really matter how far you are until it's time to go home.. Then that's the difference maker. lol
