Shreve Kicked Off Team, Charged With Assault

East Valley High (Redlands, Calif.) righthander Tyler Shreve—who ranks No. 60 on our Top 100—was kicked off his high school baseball team on Feb. 24, according to Jesse B. Gill of The Sun newspaper in San Bernadino, Calif.

That's the least of his problems right now, though.

After hearing the news that he was kicked off his team, Shreve allegedly wrestled his coach, James Cordes, to the ground and tried to punch him before being pulled away by his father.

San Bernadino County Sheriff's deputies acted on a citizen's arrest at Cordes' request, cited Shreve with assault and released him, Gill wrote.

"He and the coach had an argument," said Arden Wiltshire, spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. "He became upset when he was dismissed from the team."

He and the coach got into a dispute and it became physical, which led to him being arrested for assault."

Shreve was not taken to jail on the misdemeanor charge, Wiltshire said.
Sheriff's deputies arrested Shreve because the school – in Mentone – is outside the jurisdiction of the Redlands Police Department.

In a prepared statement, Shreve said his altercation with Cordes came after he was released from the team.

"As a result, I became very frustrated and engaged in a verbal and somewhat physical altercation with the head varsity baseball coach," he wrote. "I realize my actions were wrong, and I sincerely apologize. This was an isolated incident. I have never been in any trouble like this previously, and I'm committed to making sure that I never repeat this behavior."

In a phone call Thursday, Cordes declined to comment on why Shreve was dismissed from the team.

Shreve, 18, played shortstop for the Wildcats during the 2009 baseball season.

District officials were tight-lipped about the incident.

Redlands East Valley Vice Principal Dale Whitehurst said the school administration could not comment on the matter because it dealt with a disciplinary measure.

Pat Hafley, athletic director for the Redlands Unified School District, also refused to comment on the incident Thursday.

"Any time we're talking about students and disciplinary measures, I really can't comment," he said.

Shreve also played quarterback for Redlands East Valley's football team. He signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Utah and play football there.

University of Utah spokeswoman Liz Abel said head football coach Kyle Whittingham has not yet made a decision on whether Shreve will be allowed to play football there in the fall or whether his chances at an athletic scholarship have been damaged.

"(Whittingham) just heard about it (Thursday)," Abel said. "We're still in the process of gathering information on the incident. We won't make a further statement until we've done that."

In his e-mail, Shreve wrote that he plans to play baseball in a spring league for ABD - an independent baseball organization.

"I very much look forward to continuing the baseball season playing in the ABD Bulldogs Spring League, and to continuing my football and baseball careers at the University of Utah," he wrote.

If I were at the University of Utah, there would be not thought involved at all....his scholarship or whatever would be dropped and he would be told to take his services elsewhere......

    • I too, wish #15 was healthy and playing.  And also another RB (can't recall the #), who went down in the first game of the season. But, some others have stepped up and are hard runners.  I'm really looking forward to watching this game.
    • Still, from what little I saw, it should have been a much closer game.  WOS was missing some fundamentals on defense, and a lack of imaginative play calling on offense.  Just my opinion as an objective observer on Texan Live, which was horrible btw, but that's another story.
    • Either way,one game lead in the series. I rely to much on word of mouth
    • West Orange Stark has been a powerhouse since I csn remember. At some point, your bound to fall off to some degree. Alabama has 3 or 4 loses this season. Who would have thought? Has Orange lost kids to LCM or even Orangefield?
    • Interesting matchup this Friday. Both teams have very good offensive and defensive lines, which will make this game interesting. Having watched Texas High all season, they have a wide open offense with very good skill players. If you look at their stats they run the ball 57% of the time and pass 43% of the time. Personally, that is a bit deceiving, as most of their games have seen reserves running the ball in the 4th quarter. I would estimate the primary offense is 50/50. Through 12 games they have run for 3,224 yds (48tds) and passed for 2,894 yds (32 yds). Potter, the Tiger QB, has been very efficient with a 69% completion rate and 1 interception (which came from a tipped pass). The passing is distributed primarily to 4 receivers…. Ball (865), Wrightner (811), Montgomery (532), & Pilgreen (392). The rushing comes from 3 running backs … Johnson (1,432), Ball (768) & Moore (716).  The Tiger defense is solid and very quick.    Hope #15 is healthy enough to play. He is a test for any defense. I was concerned about the Nederland RB, but felt Texas High did a good job containing him. I wish this game was in the afternoon, as Nachitoches is having their Festival of Lights and their will not be any rooms in the inns and restaurants will be full so plan accordingly. PNG are state champions until someone knocks them off, so I extend the Indians the respect they deserve. Pulling for the Tigers.
