Kirbyville High School has had one of the most successful football programs in the state the past two years, making an appearance in consecutive 2A State Finals. Although the east Texas powerhouse began the season with a 1-2 record, the Cobras bounced back to go 12-3 thanks to a heavy dosage of 2011 running back LaFrederick Ford.

Kirbyville running back LaFrederick Ford gained an offer from Texas A&M.

Ford gained the attention of the coaches at Texas A&M after rushing for more than 2,500 yards and 35 touchdowns his junior season.. Recently offered by the Aggies, Ford is a candidate to take what is expected to be A&M's lone running back slot in the 2011 class.

"It was a good offer," Ford said. "I wasn't expecting it this early. I'm really still just thinking about [recruiting]. I still have another year of football left, so I'm just going to take my time and think. To be honest, I just want to go to college and play football."

Ford, who took a trip to College Station in January for a junior day, has been keeping in contact with the A&M staff since his visit.

"I talk to Coach (Jim) Turner a lot," Ford said. "I got to talk to all the coaches at the junior day, which was good, but I still talk to Turner and the running backs coach."

With A&M standing as Ford's only BCS offer some expected a quick commitment from the power back, but both coaches and recruit seem content with waiting.

"When they offered me they asked me how I felt about it," Ford said. "They said they knew I was going to take my time and make the right decision. They told me to keep my head on straight and continue to play good ball next year."

Ford recently underwent surgery, which will cause him to sit out of athletics for the remainder of the school year. He is, however, expected to be ready come football season.

"I had surgery on my shoulder," Ford said. "I couldn't really tell you what it was besides that. I know I am going to be back by the summer though. I'm just going to be rehabbing it, so come football season I will be ready."

Ford, who usually participates in spring athletics, will sit out in order to fully recover from surgery. The 6-foot, 190-pound back is also receiving attention from Lamar, Stephen F. Austin and Oklahoma State.

Doesn't seem like much of a debate but I'm not in his situation

Yeah.  It seems unfair to A&M doesn't it.  If he signs with Lamar, I quickly become a huge LaFredrick Ford fan.

Maybe not. Maybe A&M is not his first choice. Maybe he is waiting a bit for another offer??
