NickKBTV Posted March 9, 2010 Report Posted March 9, 2010 BEAUMONT – For the second time in three weeks, Lamar University has the reigning Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week. Matison Smith, who hurled his first collegiate shutout in a 4-0 victory over Penn State on Saturday afternoon, was the top vote getter in the weekly balloting by the league’s sports information directors. The senior right-hander from Nederland shut down the Nittany Lions on four hits. In improving to 3-0 on the season and keeping his season earned run average at a spotless 0.00, Smith struck out six batters and walked three. He had three, three-up-and-three-down innings, and he had 13 groundball outs. Smith threw 72 of his 118 pitches for strikes, and he capped his sterling performance by striking out the side in the ninth inning. Spencer Cuniff, who held the University of Maine scoreless over the final eight innings of Lamar’s 5-4, 17-inning victory on Feb. 20, earned the SLC’s first Pitcher of the Week honor for the 2010 season.
