PORT NECHES —  PORT NECHES — With the first pitch set for 7 p.m. at the Reservation, the winner of tonight's District 20-4A baseball matchup between the Port Neches-Groves Indians and Vidor Pirates will remain as the only undefeated squad in league play.

Both teams are 3-0 in district. The Indians,10-6 overall, have wins over Little Cypress-Mauriceville, Nederland and Livingston, respectively, while Vidor has defeated Central, Lumberton and Ozen.

In other area diamond matchups for tonight, Nederland baseball is hosting Central, Nederland softball travels to Lumberton and PN-G softball will play the Central Lady Jags in Beaumont.

While the Indians' resume is considerably better than the Pirates, PN-G boss Jay Stone says no team can be underestimated, especially Vidor because of southpaw pitcher Trae Hester, who is the named starter for tonight.

Hester is 4-0 on the season and already has 63 strikeout victims.

"He is, without a doubt, one of the top pitchers in the area and should probably be classified as one of the top pitchers in the state," explained Stone. "Anytime you have a young, lefty that has his velocity, heads are going to turn and for good reason."

But Stone added that his team is well prepared for this matchup.

"We've seen a number of lefties in the last couple weeks, going back to our last tournament (Lufkin). "I thought we did a good job against Kirby Bellow (Nederland ace) last week. He's another quality, lefty that has to be one of the best in the state. I think our guys probably gained some confidence from hitting him."
