Guest GCMPats Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 Ninth-inning score boosts Lee over Sterling By Dave RogersThe Baytown Sun Published April 2, 2010 A two-out pitch in the dirt went to the backstop and John Salinas scored in the top of the ninth inning to give Baytown Lee a 3-2 win over crosstown rival Sterling Thursday night. With the win, Lee has won two of three this year against Sterling.Trey Pledger was Sterling’s fourth pitcher, following Garrett Lamb, Brendan Boudreaux and Joseph Mack, and he appeared as if he’d get out of a bases-loaded jam he inherited when he struck out the first batter he faced, Lee’s Daniel Guzman.Instead, the wild pitch made Guzman the winning pitcher after throwing 2/3 innings of eight-strikeout, three-hit relief of Lee starter David Garcia. The Ganders picked up a total of 10 basehits, with shortstop Reed Seeley going 3 for 3 and making a pair of monster throws to first from deep in the hole between second and third. Seeley also walked and scored the tying run in the top of the seventh to force extra innings.Sterling managed six hits, two by catcher Zach Zavala.Mack’s two-out single to right gave Sterling a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth after Danny Sandoval led off with a bloop single, moved up on a walk to Mike Lopez and a wild pitch.Needing only three scoreless outs to close out the win, the Rangers came up short.Lamb walked Lee’s Seeley to lead off the top of the seventh, then gave way to Boudreaux, who was greeted by a John Salinas single to right. After a flyout, Emmanuel Torres drove a hit to right field, scoring Seeley just ahead of the throw from the outfield.Lee’s Garcia had a perfect game going until Sterling’s Caleb Shaver led off the fourth with a looping liner to center. Daniel Guzman could have caught it but appeared to lose the ball in the lights and it fell in for the Rangers’ first hit.Nothing came of it, though, as Garcia got the next two batters to ground into forceouts and the final out on a popup. The Ganders center fielder lost another easy out in the lights in the fifth inning, this after Garcia had issued a one-out walk to Joseph Mack. When a visibly frustrated Guzman threw the ball back into the infield, it got away on the infield just enough for Mack to make it to third, with the batter, Boudreaux, moving up to second.Mack scored on a wild pitch, tying the game 1-1 after five innings.Garcia started Lee’s run-scoring top of the fourth, singling to right. Courtesy runner Deion Miller took second when Lamb’s inside pitch hit T.J. Yrlas and went to third on a wild pitch. Lamb had Miller hung up between third and home when Miller broke early before a pitch, but Miller scored when Lamb’s throw handcuffed catcher Zavala. The Ganders threatened again in the fifth when Michael Gomez and Seeley got back-to-back infield hits to open the inning. But John Salinas lined out to second and Garcia hit into a 4-6-3 double play. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
