Ninety-nine wins and nine playoff appearances in 11 seasons is what helped Don Price become one of the three finalists for the Hamshire-Fannett athletic director/football coaching job.

But in Price’s 11-year tenure as athletic director at Barbers Hill, every sports team made the playoffs at least two times. Those were among the reasons why Monday the Hamshire-Fannett ISD hired the 58-year-old.

“I don’t know if you go in with any preconceived ideas, but you establish a good work ethic,” Price said. “You just work hard as you can.”

Price, along with Hamshire-Fannett baseball coach Wayne Mahaffey and Trinity ISD coach Chuck Langston, met the school board in a two-hour, 47-minute-span in a closed session.

The trio interviewed at different points and when all three were done, the seven-person board unanimously voted for Price.

Hamshire-Fannett superintendent Keith Elliott said the board met with all three candidates because they wanted to get a good feel for who would take over the program.

I don't know if anyone remembers...but...I called this many weeks ago!  ;D

Congrats to our friends in H-F!  You give DP a real chance, and good things will happen for the 'Horns!  :)

Congratulations Coach Price, I hope you find that most folks in Horns Country welcome you and your family with open arms. I think good things are about to happen @ HF as we have a good nucleus of kids
for him to work with. They might not be the most talanted kids in the district but they are hard working and intelligent. Good luck to Coach Price and the Horns, the fans are behind you.

Sounds like we got us a good man to take us where we need to be. Congrats on your selection Coach Price. You have a good group of kids, young men and young women, to work your magic with.

Good article HORNS R #1.

It raises some interesting questions.  Coach Price's salary at BH was $98,800.  It would be surprising if HF is close to that.  Does anyone know his contract?  If he takes a cut in pay how does that affect his Teacher Retirement?
BH bought out the remaining 18 months of Coach Price's contract for $153,000.  Is HF going to buy-out the remaining 18 months of Walt Mangan's contract?  Or are they hoping he resigns and moves on?
Coach Price's wife is a curriculum director at BH and has a law practice in Mont Belvieu!!! When does she have time to sleep???  Will Coach Price move to Hamshire or commute from Mont Belvieu?

Excellent hire for H-F.
In my opinion, it was time for a change at Barbers Hill and maybe for Coach Price also. Many BH outsiders seem to think otherwise.
Best of luck to Don Price and H-F.

Teacher Retirement is based on an "average" of your over all teacher salary. (Not sure of what years or how many, retiement is only a dream to me at this point). If he has taken a cut in pay, the effect should be minimal. Just keep that buy-out money in the bank.

For teachers that have been teaching for a while (not sure how long), retirement is based on the average of the highest 3 years.  Whether it be the 1st 3 or the last 3.  For teachers that do not fall under the "grandfathered" clause it is based on the average of the highest 5 years.  Know matter which 5.

Now, after Barbers Hill is eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, they have TWO choices...
Watch their neighbors to the north play another 3 to 5 weeks or go watch their old coach navigate the Longhorns through the 3A playoffs....

They will not be eliminated in the first round. That implies they will make the playoffs.

Now that we have a real coach, we may just cross that trinty a few more times to kick some tail.  I doubt it will be to go watch QB left, QB right, QB up the middle, which is exactly what's coming to HF.  ;)

So teachers retirement is based on the average of the 3 or 5 highest years.

Thanks GCMPats and Knows2much, for the TRS info.
