Can't wait for basketball season. Looking at the schedule, its great to see all those televised games. A few years ago A&M basketball was never on tv. Billy Clyde has really done an amazing job.

Billy Gillispie (Texas A&M)

Gillispie is poised to become a national name this season.

Bio: Age: 46; head coaching stops: UTEP and Texas A&M; led UTEP to the NCAA Tournament in 2004 after the Miners made a remarkable 18-win turnaround (from six wins to 24) in his second season; Gillispie led the Aggies from a winless Big 12 mark to a 21-10 NIT season before guiding them to the NCAAs in his second year, just like he did at UTEP; the Aggies were one long LSU 3-pointer away from moving to the Sweet 16 after beating surging Syracuse in the first round.

Why he will make news: The Aggies are a hot preseason pick for the top 15, possibly the top 10. Texas A&M returns two key players, Joseph Jones and Acie Law, either of whom could compete for Big 12 Player of the Year honors. Gillispie wasn't a household name before a few years ago, but he's quickly getting a reputation as one of the top coaches in the country. The more the Aggies win, the more he'll be in the news.

What's expected: The Aggies should push Kansas for the top spot in the Big 12. They head into the season as a legit candidate for a top-four NCAA seed. Gillispie and his good friend, Kansas coach Bill Self, should be in competition for coach of the year in the league and possibly nationally.

Headlines: The Aggies upgraded the schedule, and games against UCLA in Anaheim and LSU in Baton Rouge will draw national attention. The Aggies will be featured more in the Big 12, allowing them to get their national due.

Fran Fraschilla's take: No coach in America fits his school like this guy. Born and bred in the Lone Star State, Gillispie has worked his way up the high school and college ranks, and it seems as though he knows every high school coach from El Paso to Texarkana. Seventeen of the 19 players on the Aggies' roster, including walk-ons, are homegrown. Don't rule out a deep run in the NCAA Tournament, with Gillispie's two best players, Law and Jones, leading the way.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas- The Texas A&M men’s and women’s basketball teams will tip off the 2006-07 season on Friday night with " Maroon Madness" at Kyle Field, which will be held in conjunction with the school’s traditional Midnight Yell Practice.

A&M set the national record for such events last season when more than 26,000 fans attended. With both teams getting national attention in the preseason, A&M could break the record again this year. The men are ranked No. 9 by ESPN.com and the women are ranked No. 9 by Street & Smith's College Basketball Yearbook.

A sports-court and basketball goals are being placed on the east sideline of Kyle Field. The A&M women’s team will take the court at approximately 11:20 p.m. After Yell Practice, which will start at its regular time, the A&M men’s team will be presented at approximately 12:25 a.m.

Led by Coach Billy Gillispie, the men's team returns four starters and its top six scorers from last year when it finished 22-9 overall and defeated Syracuse in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Under Coach Gary Blair, the women’s team returns all five starters from last season's team that finished 23-9 overall and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

I'm also excited to see the renovations done to Reed Arena. They put in a new scoreboard and are installing ribbon boards all around.

From A&M point of view, La-tech and St Louis is the teams to beat and LU is the cup cake. LU will surprise A&M.

BEFORE A&M: Played in 11 games as a sophomore at UTEP in 2003-04, averaging 0.7 points and 0.2 rebounds per game....was a member of UTEP’s NCAA Tournament team...scored a career-high five points against UT-Permian Basin, including a three-point field goal, and added two points against Rice...also made 75.0 percent (3-of-4) from the free throw line...played his freshman season at Lon Morris Junior College, a team that was ranked No. 2 nationally for much of the year...two-time all-district choice at Lumberton High School, where he averaged 18 points, four rebounds and five assists as a senior while shooting 40 percent from three-point range and making 85 percent from the free-throw line...scored a career-high 33 points against Livingston...coached at Lon Morris by Dale Dotson and at Lumberton High by Colby Richards.

PERSONAL: Joshua Jay Johnston is the son of Jay and Sherry Lee Johnston of Lumberton...born on July 3, 1984 in Oklahoma City...speech communications major...wants to become a sports agent...father, Jay, played college basketball at Texas for one year...favorite NBA player is Ray Allen and his all-time favorite is Pete Maravich....is learning to play the guitar.
