Nederland has too many oldtimers running the school board and city council.  They are close-minded and resistant to change.  It's always been like this and probably always will be.  We need new blood in the city and in the school district if we expect anything to change.  If you want change, then you need to vote for and elect people who support change in the city and district.  Good luck with this...we are outnumbered by the old oldtimers... and guess what?  They vote!!  Do you????

The answer to your question is simple: for the first time in a quite a while, [u]everyone[/u] in the PN-G community feels like they have something to be proud of, and I'm not just talking about football.

I started a thread on the PN-G site a little while ago that outlined the accomplishments of Port Neches-Groves High School and its various amenities over the course of the 2009-2010 school year. This list of accolades was long at the time, and now it's even longer. Our band competed at the Area F Marching Competition, our football team went undefeated through the first round of the playoffs, our volleyball team went to the playoffs, our basketball team had its first winning season in several years, our baseball team is tied for the second place slot in our league, both of our soccer teams took the district titles and went to the third round of the playoffs, our high school is a recognized school in a recognized district, our UIL Academics team recently took its 10th consecutive district sweepstakes award (the equivalent of a district title) - and this is just what I could think of and type in the space of a few minutes (trust me, there's more). These are great times for PN-G. We're performing well on every front. The Indian Nation realizes that and is getting excited.

The Indians are on the warpath, and as good as this year is, I can't shake the feeling that next year is going to be even better.

The board voted in an "outsider" as our new Superintendent... so they don't appear to be the issue in my opinion.  They selected who they thought would be the best for the district and brought change in from the outside.  Folks will have their opinions about who the best candidate was, but I can say that this board was not afraid of bringing in new blood as you put it.

The FACT is that the plants are in a money crunch, like everyone else, and they give a [i]fraction[/i] of what they did in the past.  No one's complaining about it, as we are all so appreciative of every dollar, but the days of big money donations seem to be over, at least for the time being.

agreed there fb...that group has a lot of talk but in reality all they have done is complain about the current state of affairs in Nederland and done nothing (zip, nada, butkus, zilch) to improve things...I haven't seen the first plan of action from the CARE committee...their plan is to do nothing and let nature take it's course I suppose

Huntsman pays Port Neches to keep quiet about pollution. Shell does it with Deer Park. Lyondell & Chevron does it with pasadena ISD. Its just how things work in plant towns.

The interesting thing for me is they run their campaigns as Conservatives.... I consider myself conservative, but I also have the notion, maybe it's mistaken, that Conservatives favor State/Local government versus nationalized.  I'm more than willing to pay in tax dollars, for improvements that I can see and use and enjoy... and silly me (BENEFIT FROM)... here in my own city.  I think people really need to think about what they are supporting... because as you said RAZOR, they support doing NOTHING.  How can you vote for that?  If you want to argue about sins of the past and how we should run the new schools we need... hey great, get involved, I'm all for it.  But to hog tie our city is sad.  Find out who these candidates are so you vote with the facts... because they are out there.  I'm sure they are great people, but folks have to decide how they think and if it matches up with the candidate they are voting for.

If you want change then get more than 1000 to 2000 thousand to go vote. All of the voters are the older crowds. Thats how they get what they want they vote. Think about this 70 to 80 % of the votes are cast by people who no longer have kids in school. You want change get all your neighbors to vote. Enlist the help of the students to get there parents out of the house and to the booth.

I was shocked at the vote from the last bond proposal.. it was shot down like 75% to 25%. I agree with what others have said, the nederland community seems to be full of older people. Not to stereotype or anything, but typically that type of crowd is resistant to change. I went to Langham 14 years ago and it was in bad shape then. C.O. Wilson was in bad shape also. The high school is hanging in there but i dont understand the philosophy of throwing money over and over again into a bottomless pit instead of building something new that will last. I will be a dog until I die, and I am one of those dogs that hates the colors purple and white; but the PNG community supports their schools and athletes. It could be an 0-10 season and the stands are packed. Nederland? we lose two games in a row and our season is down the drain and people decide to stay home and watch dancing with the stars. It's irritating and frustrating the people in Nederland are so bandwagon.

This is just an "outsider looking in" perspective, so take it for what it's worth.

I was at Nederland High School about two months ago and was there again a month ago tomorrow, and to be honest, I'm shocked. That high school is in terrible shape, and nearly everyone there from PN-G agreed with me. There are wires hanging down from the ceiling in places, the walls in some of the classrooms look like they're barely standing up and would fall down if you moved a couple desks around, there was insulation hanging out of the ceiling in one room, some of the electrical outlets stick out of the walls and the wiring is exposed, the cafeteria's ceiling looks like it's about to fall in, and the whole building has a generally run-down look. Don't get me wrong, PN-GHS has its own problems. But our campus is undergoing renovations. It's supposed to look like a construction site, and it didn't look as bad as Nederland's before construction began.

That being said, NHS has a very nice performing arts center.
