TPWD scoping options for future Rollover Pass recreational fishing opportunities

AUSTIN — The Texas General Land Office (GLO) has made application for a permit to close Rollover Pass on Bolivar Peninsula due to its impacts on beach erosion and sedimentation within the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. If the pass is closed, there will be loss of public recreational fishing access.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has heard concerns from many recreational anglers about this potential loss of fishing opportunities and will be hosting a public scoping meeting in Galveston on April 28 to discuss options for future recreational access in the Rollover Pass-Bolivar Peninsula area.

This meeting is not to discuss the Rollover Pass closure issue, rather TPWD wants to gather public comments on what preferred amenities (piers, boat ramps, parking lots, facilities, etc.) would be priority, and what locations would benefit the most people.

TPWD will provide these comments to GLO to assist in developing a plan to create the most suitable recreational fishing opportunities should Rollover Pass be closed.

The TPWD public scoping meeting will be held April 28 from 6-8 pm at the Galveston County Courthouse, 600 59th Street, Galveston. If you are unable to attend the meeting, please provide comments on preferred options for recreational fishing access by April 27 to Tonya Wiley, TPWD Dickinson Marine Lab, 1502 FM 517E, Dickinson, Texas 77539, phone 281-534-0131 or email [email protected].

While there has been talk of building a pier in the Rollover area, TPW or someone has let a great oppertunity sip by with the destruction of the Causeway bridge, this hurricane tested bridge would have made an OUTSTANDING pier.

An easy fix years ago would have been to pile granite rock out into the gulf on both sides of the pass approx.300 yds.Look at the N.Jetty and what granite rock has done to protect the beach/property.You can wade a long way to get to waist deep water in the Bolivar pocket from the sand continually building up.I think it's all baloney and the Corps of Engineers has allowed the pass to get in real bad shape and has been a danger for people enjoying the recreation for many years.Just how far does $ go-remember years ago of talk of building a huge bridge between Bolivar/Galveston because the ferry system costs over 20 years could have paid for it.I don't recall any hollering to close San Luis Pass.If it wasn't for silt/trash from the currents from the mighty Mississippi river flowing to our area by sea currents our beaches would be like Ala.Fla.where you walk out 20 yds.and it's almost over your head. It's really hard for me to Swallow all the bullshit thrown at the sportsman. Many years ago a hurricane took out the highway from High Island towards Sabine Pass and still has never been repaired.Used to take my kids down to the Cow Pens/Salt Cedars and surf fish for big reds for years east of High Island and I miss that, now catch 1 bigen your done. Then they throw out new limits to protect flounder populations and nobody goes after them like there once was,and where have all the huge golden croaker over 1 lb.gone and the once strong croaker run has disappeared from the days of old.If it's done for shipping/industry it's done right-for the outdoorsmen they don't care.Remember how the hurricane tore up the public camping/boat ramps on Sam Rayburn and many were closed a long time.Bend over from the waist-look back and up as far as you can and kiss it bye-bye little by little. Not 1 pier left out into the gulf, but heard you could fish the pier at Seawolf Park for a fee of 12.00

June 6 rollover report;@ of us fished on the bay side from 8:00 pm-7:00 am sunday morning w/2 1,500 watt floods w/not much action 1-13lb.drum-1 16"speck-2 sand trout throwing live shrimp under cork and tandem white & glow shad bodies.I'd say there were at least 30 sets of lights w/not much action.Sand trout were biting decent about when we were leaving just too tired to fish anymore.Locals came out and fished maybe 1 hr.then they left.
