Lamar schedules football games at Hawaii, at Oklahoma State and at Texas A&M

Recommended Posts

BEAUMONT – Lamar University will add a lot of glamour, class and style to its future football schedules, beginning in the 2012 season.

On Sept. 15, 2012, the Cardinals will play a game against the University of Hawaii in Honolulu’s scenic Aloha Stadium. The Cardinals will step it up even a notch more during the next two seasons when they’ll tangle with Big 12 powers Oklahoma State and Texas A&M.

“It’s exciting for our program to be able to get these games,” said Lamar coach Ray Woodard Thursday. “These are opportunities to play on larger stages, so these games will naturally give us a recruiting advantage.

“Anytime you can get the added exposure these games will bring us and at the same time get some financial help for your program, you need to do it. These are win-win situations for us.”

The Cardinals will play Oklahoma State’s Cowboys in Sillwater’s Boone Pickens Stadium on Sept. 14, 2013, and they’ll travel to College Station’s mammoth Kyle Field for their 2014 season opener against Texas A&M on Aug. 30.

“Not only will going to Hawaii be a big treat and a great trip for the players and our fans, we’ve scheduled it right,” said Woodard. “We’ll have an open date in our schedule the next week, so we’ll be able to stay over for a couple of days, and everyone will get to see the sights and go to the beach.

“It won’t make us short on our preparation time for our next game, because we won’t play it until Sept. 29. As for playing Hawaii, their teams have been very good in recent seasons, and they’re especially tough at home. It will be a big challenge for us to go over there and stay focused in those surroundings.”

Woodard, whose 2010 Cardinals recently played their Spring Game in preparation for making their return to football after a 21-year absence this fall, expressed equal excitement over landing Lamar’s first football games ever against Oklahoma State and Texas A&M.

“With the upgrades it has made to its athletic complex in recent years, Oklahoma State is as good or better, facility-wise, as any school in the country,” said Woodard. “Personally, I’ve never played or coached in Stillwater, so I’m really looking forward to it.”

With Woodard and offensive assistant coach James Brown having played their college football at the University of Texas, they are familiar with the trappings of Texas A&M’s Kyle Field as are Cardinal defensive assistants Roger Hinshaw and Craig McGallion, who played collegiately at Rice the University of Houston, respectively.

“Again, it will be exciting and a huge challenge to play before such a large crowd in an enormous stadium,” said Woodard. “Kyle Field is one of those venues that is historically tough to play in. The Aggies have a great homefield advantage – one of the best in college football – but we’re extremely excited to be going there.”

These games will bring in some cash for Lamar:
Each trip will bring a different payout package to Lamar. The school will receive $125,000 plus travel expenses for three nights from Hawaii, $375,000 from Oklahoma State and $350,000 from A&M. Those payouts are about average for FCS schools to play on the road against Bowl Subdivision schools.
Looks like they'll try to play a FBS game every year on the road.

They already had some cement up. The biggest one is for the person who gave the money for the luxury boxes... not sure who that is.

How tall are these going to be? Like two stories with the top story being even with the hill and the bottom story on ground level?

Don't know.  I would at least think that they would be 2 stories but since it is easier to get info on our espionage program through the CIA than it's been to get info on the statdium I can't say.  If they don't start out being 2 story, hopefully they will build them with a foundation to expand to 2 story.  Like planning ahead would be a good idea.

They have started them with the first floor being on top of the hill. It appears they will be even with the montagne center concourse level. Can't tell from inside the montagne how many stories though.
It'd be nice if they would move the webcam around a time or two

Here's how the Montagne Center looked last year:

Looks like there's plenty of room under the red room to add suites.  I hope they actually put in suites because it's pretty ugly looking under there.  Are these suites going to be fully enclosed or open in front?

You sure you are from Lamar? Your reading comprehension skills are very comparable to the UNLV fans on this board!

Never was talking smack, just showing you the 'elite' FCS facilities.

I'm not from Lamar but Lamar is my hometown school. And Montana is an exception, they have been pushing to move to FBS for years. And Texas Southern won't sell 5,000 tickets a game, their stadium is the Dynamos stadium. This stadium is actually Lamar's.
