Jasper Looks for Extra Motivation Against Cardinals

10/11/06

By Jeff Teague

Jasper found very little running room last season against the Cardinals. They look to do more on Friday.

Last year the Bulldogs’ season ended when the Bridge City Cardinals booted them out of the playoffs by a surprising 23-0 final.

Friday night Jasper will look to turn around their winless record and possibly exact a little revenge when they travel to Bridge City for their next district contest.

Bridge City looked poised to make a run at state following the thumping of Jasper until their star quarterback, Johnny Dishon, was injured in an automobile accident. He is back this season but the results for the Cardinals have not been as expected.

Jasper is young and looks to build toward the future and hopefully hold together a team that is beginning to struggle more as the trudge through a very tough district. Bridge City could be a springboard to salvaging a little something out of a rough season. They seem to be clinging to life offensively as new backs continue to emerge; especially youngsters like Kadorre Rawls and their two sophomore quarterbacks show baby steps toward understanding the system.

Kirbyville, still in the thick of the playoff chase, will play an important game versus Orangefield with the loser watching their playoff chances slip away. The Wildcats played last week without sophomore quarterback Aaron Hazelwood but hope to have him back in uniform against a stout Bobcat defense.

Newton will begin their journey to try and capture another district title and defense of their state title when they take on the Corrigan-Camden Bulldogs Friday night. The young Eagles who seem more like a team re-loading than rebuilding after losing key players from last year’s State Championship take on a Bulldog squad that has 18 returning starters from a team that went two deep last season.

Burkeville will be looking for their first win of the season as they open district play against the West Sabine Tigers. The boys from Pineland, picked by many to win district 23-1A, will have to deal with the rebuilding yet dangerous Mustangs who still sport running back tandem Shaka Twine and Lonnie Lewis.

Deweyville, 5 and 1, 1-1 in district will host the Warriors from Warren. The Pirates still look poised to make a run at the playoffs but this week will be a true test, as the Warriors will be nipping at their heels for a district spot. The loser of this game could find themselves as the odd man out come playoff time.
