The Astros demoted catcher J.R. Towles to Class AA Corpus Christi and purchased the contract of catcher Kevin Cash from AAA Round Rock on Tuesday, the announcement coming immediately after a 1-0 loss to the Diamondbacks.

Towles, 26, beat prospect Jason Castro for the everyday starter role in spring training. But he struggled at the plate, batting .191 with one home run and eight RBIs in 17 games.

It marks the second time in his career Towles is sent down after beginning the season as the starter, the first time coming in 2008. Towles said the move caught him off guard.

“Especially going to AA like that,” said Towles, who was informed of the decision by general manager Ed Wade. “I’m not happy about the situation, but I guess they had to make moves and I’m that move.”

The Astros sent Towles to Corpus Christi to guarantee him playing time.

“We want him to catch every day,” Astros manager Brad Mills said.

Towles, a Crosby native, said the most frustrating part about the move was not knowing where he stands with the organization.

Of his performance, he said: “I thought I did all right, considering I had just a hair over 40 at-bats. A lot can change in 40 at-bats. You can shoot your way up. I know I’m not knocking the cover off the ball, but to be honest right now nobody really is.”

His replacement, Cash, is a veteran major leaguer who has played for Boston and the New York Yankees. Cash hit .174 with two RBIs in seven games. He is a career .186 batter and will likely be the backup to Humberto Quintero.

The Astros moved righthander Alberto Arias, who is out for the season after undergoing shoulder surgery, to the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man roster for Cash.

Good move by Ed first good move he has made all year.  But I don't see cash staying up there that long.  I see Casto moving up From Round Rock after the arbitration date and cash going back down.

His next move is getting rid of Sean Berry as the NON-HITTING COACH!!!

Yeah, they may want to get someone that could actually hit when he was a player as the next hitting coach. This is not the first time he has not produced in that capacity for the Stros!
