Mid-County teams face busy playoff slate

The Port Arthur News

— The Port Neches-Groves Indians baseball team (20-9) is set to square off with San Marcos for a best-of-three area-round series that will start Thursday at 7 p.m. at Katy Morton Ranch. It was erroneously reported Monday that the series was set for Bryan.

This series will continue Friday at 4 p.m. with Game 2 and if necessary, Game 3 will follow.

San Marcos topped Waller 6-4 in the third game of a best-of-three series last weekend. PN-G also needed three games to put away Galena Park in the bi-district round.

The Indians suffered a 11-4 loss to Galena Park in Game 1, but responded with wins of 14-1 and 15-4 on Friday to advance.

The winner of this matchup moves on to the Region III quarterfinals where Little Cypress-Mauriceville or Magnolia will be waiting.

Also striving to get to the quarterfinals and beyond, the Nederland Bulldogs (23-6) open a best-of-three series with Buda Hays on Thursday at Montgomery High School, where the duration of the series will be held. Game 1 is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Game 2 is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. with Game 3 to follow if necessary.

Nederland advanced to the second round on Friday by completing a two-game sweep over Goose Creek Memorial with a 5-0 shutout. The Dogs survived Game 1 with a 1-0 decision.

The victor between Nederland and Buda Hays, which defeated Montgomery in a three-game set, will go on to face either Crosby or Brenham.

The Rebels are the No. 2 seed out of District 17-4A. They finished the season in a tie with San Marcos for first place but lost the coin flip.

Meanwhile, the 23-10 Nederland Lady Bulldogs softball team will take on the 27-12 Magnolia Lady Bulldogs at Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu this week in the Class 4A Region III quarterfinals.

Game 1 of the series is set for 7 p.m. Thursday. Game 2 will be at 7 p.m. Friday, and Game 3, if needed, will be 7 p.m. Saturday.

Nederland advanced to the quarterfinals with one-game playoff wins over Dayton (3-1) and Willis (2-0). Magnolia, the second place team out of District 18-4A, defeated Buda Hays 5-4 and 8-4 in Round 1, and then edged Barbers Hill 1-0 and 6-3 over the weekend to continue its postseason run.

The winner of this series will meet either Friendswood or Santa Fe.
