Yes, and the Hawks got about 25 yards on the last play of the game... I don't mean to sound like I'm downing them -- they gave it their all. It was just a mismatch tonight.

I'm not sure, but I know WOS held Silsbee to -17 yards total offense in '98. The weird thing about that was Silsbee got to the regional finals that year, which included a first round revenge win over WOS.

Here is the write-up from The Orange Leader

Stangs knock out Hawks, 62-0

Van Wade

The Orange Leader

WEST ORANGE — If it were a prizefight, the referee would've called the bout over in the first round at Dan R. Hooks Stadium Friday night.

The fourth-ranked West Orange-Stark Mustangs obliterated the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks every way imaginable in the first half en route to a 62-0 District 21-3A victory to stay perfect on the season.

The Mustangs piled up 290 yards alone in the first half and the "Chain Gang" defense limited H-J (3-3, 1-2) to minus 13 yards as WO-S (6-0, 3-0) went into intermission with a 49-0 lead.

H-J finished with just six total yards for the night and just two first downs, one on a personal-foul facemask in the first half and one on the last play of the game when H-J quarterback Elliot Deshotel broke loose on a 17-yard gain.

Senior quarterback Andre Bevil was 9-for-10 for 207 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, including two 40-yard scoring strikes to Jacoby Franks and a 50-yard TD to Earl Thomas.

The two schools agreed to have a running clock in the second half as the Hawks received a little mercy. Just 16 plays were ran in the second half but the Mustangs still found time to score twice.

Bevil finished 10-of-11 for 217 yards and four touchdowns. Thomas caught two passes for 85 yards and two scores, rushed twice for 40 yards and had a 59-yard punt return. Franks had three receptions for 86 yards and two touchdowns. Junior tailback DePauldrick Garrett had 42 yards on eight totes and scored twice as the Mustangs finished with 321 total yards.

“Our kids were clicking on all cylinders,†said Mustang head coach Dan Hooks. “Our defense just dominated and did what they wanted to do all night long and H-J simply had no answer for it. They put seven men in a box to start and they kept creeping up on us after we hit a few short passes then we were able to drop some big ones on them. Bevil, 10-of-11 ain’t bad, it’s hard to believe he missed one the way he was throwing tonight.â€

Now the Mustangs can hone in on Silsbee next week as they take to the road to face the Tigers (5-1, 3-0) with 21-3A first-place rights on the line.

“The best thing about the game tonight is that we came away pretty much injury-free,†said Hooks. “What a treat, we get to go to Silsbee for their homecoming next week. We’ve had some great games in the past and this one should be a good one too. First-place is up for grabs and they’ll be fired up for us. They’ve got some big old boys up front and solid little skill people. We’ll have our hands full coming up for a gameplan against them.â€

It didn't take long for the Mustangs to light up the scoreboard as they took the first series of the game and raced 60 yards to the end zone in just five plays.

Bevil connected with a Thomas on a perfectly-thrown pass down the right sidelines that was good for 35 yards down to the H-J 15. On the next play, DePauldrick Garrett found a gaping hole off right tackle and sprinted to the end zone untouched from 15 yards out. The point-after pass failed but the Mustangs grabbed a 6-0 edge with 9:54 left in the first period.

On their next possession the Bevil and Thomas hooked up again on a 50-yard scoring strike. On a perfect play call, Bevil hit Thomas on a screen and the speedy senior did the rest, juking out two Hawks along the left side and then cut back across the middle to fly into the end zone. Once again, a two-point conversion pass failed as the Mustangs led 12-0 with 6:08 left in the first.

H-J, going backwards the whole quarter had a major gaffe when a punt snap went over the head of punter Justin Anderson's head and into the end zone. Anderson managed to pick the ball up but threw an incomplete pass, which allowed the Mustangs to take over at the Hawk 8. Two plays later, Thomas dazzled the Mustang faithful with a tremendous 8-yard touchdown run where he took off to the right and didn't find any daylight so he reversed back to the other side of the field, faked two Hawks out and scored on a 8-yard jaunt. Bevil converted a two-point conversion run to push the lead to 20-0 with 2:42 still left in the first.

“After that bad punt snap, I thought we had control of it for sure then,†said Hooks. “It kinda snowballed on them from that point on. We’re just so pleased to see how focused our kids were tonight with it being Homecoming and all. They never let down, even when we got way ahead. We like the shape we’re in right now and hopefully we’ll carry it over into Silsbee game.â€

The Mustangs matriculated right on down the field on their first series of the second quarter, going 63 yards in just five plays. Thomas side-stepped his way down the right sidelines for a 32-yard gallop and three plays later Garrett scored on a punishing 3-yard run off left tackle for the touchdown. Bevil hooked up with Jacoby Franks on a two-point conversion pass, pushing the big advantage to 28-0 with 9:28 left in the half.

Bevil teamed up with Franks again pretty quickly, this time on the six-point variety. Franks darted across the middle wide-open and Bevil hit him in stride on a 40-yard scoring toss to make it 35-0 with 6:59 remaining in the half.

Mustang senior linebacker Justin Alexander made it 42-0 when he picked off H-J quarterback Elliot Deshotel at the Hawk 25 and returned it for a touchdown with 4:45 left in the half.

It was the "Bevil & Franks Show" again late in the half when Bevil hit a wide-open Franks around the H-J 5 and Franks cruised into the end zone to complete another 40-yard scoring toss to give the Mustangs a 49-0 lead with 1:09 left in the half.

Thomas broke loose on a 59-yard punt return early in the third period and Bevil followed with his fourth touchdown pass when he found a streaking Dominique Rhodes across the end zone from 10 yards out to make it 56-0 with 4:37 left in the third.

The Mustangs tallied the game’s final score when backup tailback Leatrice Robinson scored from a yard out with 6:50 left in the game.

H-J leading rusher on the night was fullback Joe Scott, who had just 7 yards on three carries. H-J sophomore tailback Trey Burrell, who had 503 yards and five TDs on 89 carries going into the game, finished with just 3 yards on seven carries.

H-J will try to recover next week when they take a road trip to Kirbyville (4-2, 2-1).
