It was 27-7 WB at the half. WB had HUGE plays throughout the first half. Three plays of 60 yards or more I believe.

First drive of the third quarter, Lee threw an int and WB returned it to the Lee 5 yard line. They were about to go up34-7, but WB fumbled and Lee took it back for a td. From that point on, It was pretty nip and tuck. Lee didn't pass the ball much. At one point in the first half, Lee put in a wide receiver and just ran the ball on some option. The entire second half, Lee just ran the ball up the gut 95% of the time. Somehow it actually worked. Don't ask me how.

Lee closed the deficit to 33-28 with 7 or 8 minutes to go. WB came back and converted on about a 3rd and 17. Then they converted 4th and goal from the 1 yard line with Billy Chavis providing the Reggie Bush push to get Chaisson over the goalline.

WB stopped Lee on downs, then inexplicably with 1:30 to go and Lee having one timeout, WB was running the ball. They fumbled and Lee got it back, but they had to throw at that point, which isn't one of our strong suits with Moses out. That would have been the bonehead mistake of the millenium if Lee got back and won the game after that fumble. No reason to risk it up 40-28 at the time.

WB has some good running backs. All 3 of them are good. The quarterback is pretty solid and makes good throws. Chavis is probably the best collegiate prospect they have. I was impressed with their team. They should do well in the playoffs if they can limit the mistakes.

Lee will be very tough once Moses gets back. They were running at will in the second half without any threat of a passing game. Here's hoping he's back for the PAM game or I think we could be in trouble.

W. Brook gallops past Ganders, 40-28

On a night of big plays and big miscues, it was West Brook which had the edge in the former, as the Bruins came away with a 40-28 victory over Lee in a battle for a share of first place in District 21-5A.

West Brook’s Albert Williams served notice on what kind of a night it was going to be on the second play from scrimmage, as the Bruin tailback went up the middle, shook off two REL tacklers and raced 76 yards for a 6-0 lead with the game less than 30 seconds old.

But Williams was just getting warmed up. On his next carry he took an option pitch 83 yards for a score, and the fourth time he touched it, he went 72 yards to the REL 6 which set up another touchdown.

In the first half, alone, Williams had 10 carries for 278 yards as the Bruins built a 27-7 lead at intermission.

“Three big plays in that first half killed us,†REL defensive coordinator Mark Crooms said. “For some reason we weren’t ready to play in the first half, and I’ll take the blame for that.â€

Lee’s only points in the first half was a six-yard touchdown pass from Octavio Torres to Michael Mahan. “We didn’t play well the first half,†REL head coach Dick Olin said. “We didn’t tackle well and our kickoff coverage wasn’t very good. I thought the kids did a good job of fighting back and the defense was able to come up with some turnovers.â€

It took a mistake by the Bruins to allow the Ganders to start creeping back into the contest.

West Brook appeared ready to slam the door on REL when Michael Williams picked off an Octavio Torres pass and returned it all the way to the REL 3-yard line. But on the next play, Bruin quarterback Joe Chaisson made a bad pitch on an option and the Ganders’ Jesse Luna scooped up the loose pigskin and raced 79 yards for a TD to cut the deficit to 27-14.

REL had a chance to cut even farther into the visitors’ lead, when the Ganders got the ball right back after a great play by David Carr. Carr knocked the ball loose from Christan Michael and then fell on it himself to give the Ganders the ball at the 35-yard line. REL quickly marched to the WB 39 but turned the ball over on downs.

The Bruins quickly answered, with Chaisson hooking up with James Banks from 18 yards out to make the score 33-14 with 50 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Ganders answered with a 57-yard march which took only a couple of minutes. Jarvis Moore, who finished with 143 yards on 17 carries, capped the march with a 4-yard run up the gut. Desarien Cartwright’s two-point run made the score, 33-22.

Things got even tighter moments later, when REL’s Thomas Bates jarred the ball loose from Banks with the Ganders recovering at the 41-yard line. This time it took REL only one play to score, as Moore found daylight up the middle before outracing the Bruin secondary to paydirt. After a failed two-point attempt, REL trailed 33-28.

Then came the key drive of the night, as West Brook marched 70 yards for the clinching score. Twice the Bruins were able to convert on third-and long to keep the drive alive. On third-and-9, Chaisson hit Banks for 14 yards and a first down. Then moments later, facing third-and-177 from the REL 48, Chaisson hit Jeremy Ford for 33 yards to the Gander 15. The pass was underthrown, but Lee’s Rashad Mohammed, who was in coverage, slipped down allowing Ford to make the catch.

Chaisson capped the march with a one-yard sneak on fourth down with 4:12 remaining.

“We had our chances to put them away and didn’t do it,†West Brook coach Craig Stump said. “A good football team is not going to go away.â€

The win dropped REL to 4-2 overall, 2-1 in 21-5A, while West Brook improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the district. The Ganders will return to action next Friday at Port Arthur Memorial. Memorial will play at Kingwood tonight.

Although the Bruins won the game, the score should not have been as close as it was. If WB is going to have a repeat playoff performance like last year ( or better) , they are going to have to cut down on ALOT on the mistakes. For a team that is supposed to be disciplined and not make alot of mistakes, Stump still has a bunch of work to do. And Christian Michael (#33) cannot afford to fumble the ball any more this season (3 times against Lee). Billy Chavis may be our best college prospect, but it won't matter if he can't stay out of trouble with the police and ends up in jail!
