County to Rebuild Walter Umphrey Pier

Southeast Texas anglers can look forward to the opportunity to cast a line from a new fishing pier at Walter Umphrey State Park - something they haven't been able to do since before Hurricane Ike.

Jefferson County Commissioners on Monday approved plans for the pier restoration project at the park, located on Pleasure Island in south county.

Precinct 3 commissioner Michael Shane Sinegal said plans call for the pier to be rebuilt as it was before - a lighted walkway jutting into Sabine Lake - but concrete bulkheads will replace wooden pilings.

Don Rao, the county engineering superintendent, said the county plans to start advertising for bids on Wednesday, and in four weeks, should open the bids to contractors.

The project is about two months ahead of schedule, Sinegal said.

Thats good news...

anyone heard anything about Dick Dowling Park in Sabine Pass?  Last time I tried to launch there it was jacked up.  Not only the ramps but the entire park.

IMO a big blunder was made by NOT making the old causeway bridge a pier,seems as if a few dollars would have been saved along with the causeway bridge has been tested a cpl of times over the yrs with several storms. Don't know whats up with Dick Dowling park BUT the ramp SUCKS, last time I checked it was knee deep almost out to the entrance off the channel, NICE park tho....
