WEST ORANGE — West Orange – Stark High School Boys’ Basketball Coach Don Newton has accepted the position of Head Boys’ Basketball Coach at Corsicana High School, a 4-A high school located southeast of Dallas with an enrollment of approximately 1700 students.

Newton led the WO-S High School Boys’ Varsity Basketball team to a 22-11 record during the 2009-2010 season, winning Bi-District and Area Championship titles, and advancing to the regional quarterfinals.

Under his leadership, the Mustangs also won the Nederland High School Bulldog Classic and the Bridge City High School Holiday Tournament.

“I had a great experience returning home. I thought the kids’ efforts were off the charts; and I was appreciative of all the support,” Newton said.

WO-C Superintendent Dr. Taylor Collins has accepted Newton’s resignation which will become effective June 30.

“I am disappointed to lose Coach Newton, but I understand his need to fulfill his dreams. Mr. Newton is a winner on the court and off the court. I admire his character and his superior ability to coach basketball. I know of no better strategist on the basketball court,” Collins said.

Newton has coached basketball for 11 years and has accumulated a 205-108 record.

“He has a glorious future ahead of him. Our loss is Corsicana’s gain,” Collins said.

He is a really good coach. Kept his team in that playoff game against a talented Silsbee squad. They need to do what they did when they hired him- go outside the district

Corsicana was 0-27 last year. Only one way to go....up. Congrats and good luck Coach Newton! Back to the drawing board WO-S. They have a talented young assistant coach who knows the kids and the system, maybe he gets his shot in the first chair.
