Great job BC!! Vs a solid team. Huffmans catcher had about 5 past balls.

Hicks, bats lead Bridge City to Game 1 win
By DAVID HENRY

Bridge City starter Matt Hicks didn't have his best stuff on Friday night, but the senior pitcher did have his composure, which helped his team get through a rough start to the game.

Hicks and the Cardinals came from behind to defeat Huffman Hargrave 12-5 in Game 1 of a third-round playoff game on Friday night at Nederland High School.

Hicks threw a complete game, giving up no earned runs and fanning six.

"(Hicks) was a little tired out there, but he battled through it," Bridge City coach Chad Landry said. "It shows you how good he is when he doesn't have his best stuff, but still gives up zero earned runs. Our goal is to score one run an inning and we did that tonight. It was ugly, but we had our sticks working and we put the ball in play."

Rhodes, Cards power past Falcons, 12-5

Gabriel Pruett Orange Leader

NEDERLAND —
Talk about a deflating loss for the Huffman Falcons and a confidence builder for the Bridge City Cardinals.

The Falcons carried a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the second only to see Bridge City come back and win 12-5 at Nederland High School.

Game 2 will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at New Caney High School with Game 3 to follow 30 minutes later if necessary.

Bridge City (24-5-1) has seen its bats start to come alive while its defense was the problem Friday.

The Cardinals committed five errors in the game yet got key big hits from everyone in the line up behind starter Matt Hicks.

Senior Luke Rhodes is one of those hitters as he reached base all four times, scoring twice with two RBI.

“It feels good to be back in the swing of things,” Rhodes said. “I am glad I am finally hitting the ball and helping my team win. We all knew Hicks would settle down and start to get outs. We have to clean up our defense, keep swinging the bats and we will be fine.”

Hicks gave up five hits in seven innings with two earned runs, one walk and three hit batters.

“It is always better to start ahead in the game,” Hicks said. “My confidence in myself and team was never in doubt. It is amazing how this whole team is hitting right now. We are coming together at the perfect time.”

The Cardinals went up 5-4 for its first lead in the bottom of the fourth when Joe Robertson hit a RBI ground out to short.

Bridge City then busted open for six runs in the fifth to take command.

Matt Menard had three big RBI in the game while Evan Boren, Zach Smith, Mitchell Hubbard, Forrest Zoch and Rhodes all scored twice.

Smith had a two-run double in the fifth.

The Falcons (19-10) put up four runs in the first two innings off three hits and four BC errors.

Neither of Huffman’s first two runs in the first innings was earned.

Cole DeBerry had a two-run single in the bottom of the second to make it 4-1.

Tyler West got the start for Huffman and went 3 1/3 innings giving up five runs with seven hits, two walks and one strike out.
