Seahawks hoop coach signs new contract

First-year Lamar State College-Port Arthur head basketball coach Matt Cross will be back for a second season at the helm of the Seahawks.

The college announced today that Cross has signed a new contract.

Lamar State president Dr. Sam Monroe said the college community is delighted to have Cross return.

“The contract took a little longer than we planned,” Monroe said. “But, now it’s done, and we can move forward with rising expectations and a most optimistic outlook for the men’s basketball program after Coach Cross’ first record-setting season.”

Cross is the third head coach to lead Lamar State hoop program, following Don Bryson, who came out of retirement to start the program in 2004 and lead it through the first four years, and Jerre Cole, who coached the team one season (2008-09).

In his first season, Cross’ Seahawks compiled the best-ever record in the program’s six-year history, going 20-11 overall and 10-9 in Region XIV action. They also set 10 team season records, seven individual season records and four individual single-game records.

Lamar State also reached the conference tournament for the first time and, along the way, defeated three nationally-ranked teams, including the eventual conference champion, Navarro College.

Cross said he is excited about the coming year.

“I’m certain our basketball program will continue to get better and better,” Cross said. “I am grateful to Dr. Monroe and the college faculty and staff for their on-going support and commitment to me and the basketball program. I look forward to working with all of the Seahawk family who faithfully support the team.”

Cross said he has lofty goals for his 2010-11 squad.

“Coaching never is boring if you set high goals,” he said. “I truly believe that if we can add the right pieces to our roster to augment the sophomores we have coming back, we will be able to contend for a national championship.”

    • In a video released Monday, Raja Cholan, a top official at the U.S. National Library of Medicine under the NIH, admitted to an undercover OMG operative he doubts jab efficacy and hasn’t “gotten the latest COVID shots and I’m not going to.”  “I PROBABLY SHOULDN’T BE SAYING THIS OUT LOUD;” Chief Confesses COVID Health Initiatives Were "COMPLETELY MADE UP”. "I don’t even know if these vaccines stop you from getting COVID. They don’t.” Adds, "We're all going to learn [about vaccine safety] when it's too late," as Pfizer & Moderna "are just getting a bunch of money… Vaccines were accelerated through the approval.” ‘We fly under the radar of being scrutinized…I don't think I have too much to worry about.’ Trump victory “worse for the NIH.” “It would be better for a Democrat to be in office.” WOW!!!!
    • The same reason you worry about Trump more than anything else. Why do trolls like yourself start threads like your Soros hedge fund thread and you never come back to…..just bait. Newsom might make a run for president in 2028. People need to know about his policies. You don’t think that’s important?
    • I like Newton’s chances here. I’ve watched  videos of Daingerfield what few I could get. Their big Qb scares me a little he looks Ike a good athlete. I think for a change Newton has a little more speed than the Tigers. That Samuel kid for Newton can move., and it goes without saying about Porter. That Hunter kid ain’t bad either. They scared me to death with their pass defense against Edgewood until I saw the video. That Qb for Edgewood can put it on a dime. And, his receivers could catch it. I’m pumped; this is the most fun time of the year for me. Go Eagles.🦅 I have to add this though. I watched the State game between the tigers and Yoe in 2010. Those guys looked like grown men playing as opposed to kids now a days who look like boys.😂 that was a heck of a good game.
