BRYAN — Take that No. 1.

The No. 4 Orangefield Bobcats struck first in Game 1 of the Class 3A Region III Regional Semi-finals against the No. 1 Robinson Rockets with a 7-4 victory at Bryan High School.

Jace Statum shook off a rough start to hold the Rockets (31-4) to only 4 hits in seven innings with nine strike outs and only three walks.

Game 2 is slated to start at 3 p.m. Saturday in New Caney with Game 3 to follow 30 minutes, if necessary.

Orangefield (28-3) took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth.

Kyle Fontenot and Derrick Evans led off with back-to-back singles before Statum brought in both runners to make it 3-2 when he ran all the way to third on a Robinson error.

Statum later tied the game at 3-3 when Jacob Felts reached on an error.

Parker James, courtesy runner for Felts, gave the Bobcats a 4-3 lead when Quinton Evans had a RBI single to left.

The Bobcats got three, huge insurance runs in the top of the seventh as Jonathan Deramus scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-3.

Then with one out and courtesy runner Parker James on second, Quinton Evans hit a two-run blast to make the final score. James was in to run for Jacob Felts who got on base with a walk.

The Rockets got off to a quick start with three run in the first inning.

Ryan White and Brandon Ashcraft each had RBI singles in the bottom of the first.

White later scored after an Orangefield error to make it 3-0.

Orangefield threatened in the first two innings yet came away with no runs.

The Bobcats stranded three runners in the first two innings, two in scoring position.

Deramus doubled in the first inning with one out yet was stranded and Quinton Evan and Corey Huckabay were both left on base in the second.

The Bobcats still found it hard to get anything going off Walker in the third and fourth innings.

The Rockets turned a double play in the third and Josh Watson was thrown out at second to end the top of the fourth after hitting an infield single and trying to advance on a ball which got past Robinson’s first baseman on a throw from second.

Statum settled down after the first inning.

The senior Bobcat only allowed a hit in the second and had six strike outs through the first four innings.

Robinson had a runner stranded in the third afer White reached on an error.

Statum struck the next two batters out to keep Robinson from doing anymore damage.

The Rockets scored their final run of the night when Walker scored as Chad Hollingsworth reached on an error.

Walker went the first five innings for Robinson and gave up four runs on eight hits with one walk and one strike out.
